In my limited experimentation, that dancing is caused but voltage variances and heat from the components. I think what is needed is really good voltage regulator at the 5 volt input to the circuit.

Have you tried the hardware/schematic in this thread?
You should be able to get very solid characters. With the DIY hardware I have been able to get perfect sync.

I will maybe upload a video later with a better recorder.

The supply-voltage shouldn't have any major influence on the sync-detection. The reference-voltage is generated by a diode with the same voltage-drop independent of the input voltage.

Interesting, reason I say this is, I have built two now and there is a huge difference in the lettering quality depending upon the power source. The newest build, I am using a 5 volt source from duemilanove and getting near perfect video snyc however, it will deteriorate (not much) over time.

I will attempt to do a time-lapse recording today however, even with the minor deterioration, I am a very HAPPY CAMPER.

Skip to 2:00 for the good stuff. Still using the 38400 gps. No dancing here. My groundstation is inside with omni antenna only.

mrfliboy thats what you call a "no dancing" osd ? it never stop dance to my eyes.

It's most likely the fact that he's transmitting on a wireless video transmitter that's making it "dance," not the OSD itself. That you can't do much about.

Yes thats the wireless link, not the osd itself. The OSD is very solid IMO

Hi Dennis,
I've built the Diy osd with your original diagram and is working well but not yet tested in flight, I will test soon, BTW i'd like to built also an OSD using LM1881 changing some pins in the sketch.
My question is VSYN out and SYN out how are connected to Int0 and Int1 pins ?
I want see the difference using arduino voltage comparator or using synchro separator with LM1881.

The OSD doesn't really care if you mount it in a sub, a car or a plane (as long as you keep it dry )

But it will probably be difficult to find a GPS working under water. Also, the heading is calculated from the movement, so you have to move a couple of km/h to get a good reading.

When using LM1881 you just have to choose the controller SimpleOSD OPEN. Only difference is the use of the LM1881 synch detector. Atmega 328p only supports interrupts on digital pin 2 and 3 - so you will have to use these pins.
