How to build this part?

Greetings! I was going to ask in the Sailboats forum but found you guys over here and decided to try first.

I'm working on a Graupner Micro Magic and am interested in building a part for it I saw in a picture: The black piece moving the rudder shown below.

I'm just not sure where to start. What material is it? How to make the channels for the rigging? What is it even called?

If anyone can point me in the right direction please do....

Many thanks,

- Mike

I'd just use tree layers of ply, the inner layer a little smaller to make a slit for the wire.

Pull pull is interesting but why go for flash use threaded rod and clevises, if you want envious looks try to paint it with a carbon fiber texture. First set her up to work flawlessly then go for glamour, IMO.

Did what I could with sheet aluminum and a brass 3mm U-joint half instead. I like the pull-pull despite all I've been told.

I think I just wanted to use some of my trick aluminum flux...

Considering a stronger line, maybe some 10lb test - but the force of the servo flexes the deck already at full power.

A tiller quadrant is really a pully with parts of it cut away to save weight. To make your own you will need a lathe, or laminate several layers together as mentioned by sablatnic. The layers could be plastic, or carbon fiber, or ??
And whatever you do for a quadrant, use the same style on the servo. If you build a double arm and are using soft line instead of a rod, then use a double arm on the servo too. Don't go from a wheel to an arm. That will leave you with a slack side at the end of the throw. And since you will need to pull some tension on the lines you might want to add some bracing on your rudder post. It also helps prevent breaking when you bang the rudder into the trunk of the car as you take the boat out.

Steering Quadrant

Another way to build a quadrant, solder up the 3 plates to produce the 2 grooves for the cable.. This is a steam launch project but the principle is the same; you could route the cables around the turning blocks and go forward with them, under the deck, rather than straight down to the servo drum, as was done here.
