I just happen to have the Plans for the Ziroli F8F Bearcat plans i also built the powered version years ago , maybe the use of HD EPS foam some glass cloth and some epoxy its 80" so maybe a little stretching of the wing to around 90" the Tailplane and elevators are huge so should be ok Camperdown 2010 Glenn ?

Thinning the foil on large PSSers doesn't do much. I've seen them with thin foils and fat foils and they fly pretty much the same. So put a foil on that makes the plane look right. You should however use a sailplane foil. Power plane foils just don't fly very well on the slope.

Try to keep it light as light as possible. Heavy is fine for small lead-sled type planes but heavy just means you will be landing fast and at Cajon and most other SoCal slopes that's a bad combo. The lighter you make it the more flyable it will be. It will need a crapload of lead in the nose. So make sure you make the front STOUT. Otherwise all that lead will just tear the nose off if you land hard.

Big planes are cool, however they fly like tugboats. Larger control surfaces will help liven them up a bit but don't expect them to fly like small planes.

And you MUST put in the dive brakes and a bomb drop
Brian,

What I wanted to avoid is a thin wing due to the way the dauntless is fared. I wanted to avoid the wall to fuse look and Paul and I were talking about that very same thing off the board. He to had the suggestion of sticking with the pretty much stock or close to it airfoil in the center flat panel and from there going into the final pick airfoil. I do understand that she will fly like a tug and I am hopping for that. The last thing I want to see is a Dauntless going Mach1 I think that would kill the thrill for me. Dive flaps, I wouldn't build it if I didn't have them functional. Heck, ... I think I am just wanting the dive flaps and I think I am having to build the rest of it just so I can have my flaps flying.

You choice of using the 3021 sound good, I will defiantly look into that one for sure.

The weight will be up there, but I will always have that weighing (pun intended) in the back of my mind so I am going to really concentrate on keeping the back 1/3 feather light friendly. I was just at the ISR site looking over all the Slop Flyer magazines (what happened to them) and was finding out about the power to slope conversion goodies.

Do you think a bird this size will need the stretching of the wing and tail feathers?

Specs according to plans;

Fuselage Length .. 78"
Wing ................. 1750 Sq. in.
Horizontal ............ 410 sq. in.
Vertical ............... 150 sq. in.

Thanks
Bill

Doug
Doug,

Thant would be GREAT!

I can figure it all out and let you know in a day or so. I will be dropping off a chunk of Urethane Foam to you and we can do it then if you don't mind.

Speaking of foam. I had just bought 8 sheets ( 2 for Doug) of 3" Dow Deckmate blue foam and 4 sheets (1 for Doug) of High Load 40 from Allied in Anaheim off Anaheim Blvd. For those that are looking for it, they have over 300 sheets left in stock and the 3" and it's priced at $13.90 a sheet. Go stock up now before I do a 1/2 scale!

Hmmm .... The fresh smell of cooking Foam .....

Stretching the wing never hurts on a PSSer. But at that size I don't think you have to. On the smaller stuff it's very hard to get them to fly without stretching the wings but when you go big that's not as much of an issue. I think it will be fine at scale length. If you feel the wieght is going to be way up there then consider stretching it.

Hey Dave,
I will be using the urethane for a canopy mold. I don't want to rip off Bills thread, just wanted to explain where it was going.

Bill, Let me know what evening you want to stop by in a PM, or a phone call. Later,

Doogie

Sounds great Steve, but limit the stretching. As TFLG said, there's not much need to at the larger sizes.

I have cut lots of urethane foam during the coarse of my profession and no one should even attempt it unless they vigorously adhere to these three simple rules;

1). You understand that it is highly toxic
2). You do it outside and not in just a well ventilated room.
3). You wear a REAL respirator and not a dust mask.

Brian,

Now that's the best news of the year!

I didn't want to change a thing unless it was absolutely necessary. I wanted to be a scale purest on this build.

I found some good news in my email this morning ..........

Laser Lizard (Jessie Wilkins) has sent my Laser Short Kit today!!!!!

Whoo Hooo!

The Fedex says it will be here on the 5th, only thing is, it's supposed to be raining!!!!!!! Can we say Soggy Box! I might call them and see if they will leave it next door (girl friend) or in my garage.

Anyhow, There will be pictures of the kit when I get home from work on the 5th. I spent today's lunch hour mapping out the wing build. I am taking Mr. Lairds advice and going with the 3021 airfoil.

Anyone have any ideas on servos for this beast?

Flaps
Dive Breaks
Ailerons
Elevator
Rudder
Bomb

Oh, ... I almost forgot, I also bought a 1/32 model to use for reference with the panel lines and other detail. It too shipped today and will be here the 5th also. Looks like today was a good day on the Dauntless front.
