Sure, clean up the blades but be sure to balance it as that type is usually way out of balance.
Once that is done, you will have to dynamically balance the fan and motor together (the tricky part).

I am luck in that the guy who gave me the fan unit knows all about these finer tips and offered to tutor me in them :-)
