11T vs. 13T Pinion gear?

Can someone share pros and cons or experience in the difference between 11T and 13T pinion gears on a 450 class heli?

thanks

there is no pro's and cons when comparing pinions, its all depends on what motor you are running and how much headspeed you want. but to try and asnwer your question: typically the 13t will yeild more headspeed but draw more amps, while a 11t would be the opposite.

ok, so based on that... learning to hover and longer battery time would have me running an 11T i think?

yes a smaller pinion is ideal for longer run times and the lower headspeed will make the heli more tame for learning to hover, it's still a good idea to use a headspeed calculator to determine the final headspeed with that pinion based on the motor you plan on using. to low of a headspeed can make the heli unstable.

Here is the headspeed calculator I use:

It's a balancing act, just like anything else. I'm running a lower headspeed and a lower Kv motor on my 450 cause it's for scale flight. I've got a bit higher headspeed on my 600e since I do fast forward flight and basic aerobatics. Balance between amps, pinion gear, motor Kv, and headspeed.

It matters what KV your motor is rated at.....A 13 Tooth would run better on a 3500KV and an 11 Tooth would run better on a 3700KV....There are a lot of other factors to look at too like blade length....

When I was first learning to fly (crash) CP, I flew a HK 450GT with an NTM Rotor Drive 450 3400KV with a 12 tooth pinion. Hovered nicely at 1/2 throttle with about 6 degrees of pitch. I tached the head speed at I believe 1900 RPM tied down so I imagine around 2200 RPM unloaded (wild guess).

So I hope you are planning to run a 6s battery?

That motor is very low Kv designed to run off a 6s battery, you would be lucky to get off the ground on a 3s.

For the pinion... that would depend on what version of the 450 you had. Some use 150t main gear and some use 121t. As a typical starting point the 11t pinion would normally be used with the 121t main and the 13t with the 150t .

Thats what I was thinking. The KV is too low. A friend of mine in trying to order the same 3400KV motor I had erroneously ordered the 1800KV version...to slow. He was flying the same HK450GT that I had. 150 tooth main gear and 3S battery.
