Looking for opinions from experts on this build

hi everyone,

firstly let me say hello to everyone, I am a new user from Ireland

I have gone ahead and ordered most of the bits for my H.A.L. hexcopter,

What im wondering is my motor choice bad? im bit concerned that there too small and not powerful enough for this hex, I ordered the NTM 28-26 1000kv 235w, these can run 3s or 4s, I plan on running them on 4s with 9x4.7 props and 2x5000mah 4s batteries. my aim is to get more flight time.

my build list so far all of which have been ordered and awaiting delivery.

1x #9171000112/25698 Turnigy H.A.L. (Heavy Aerial Lift) Hexcopter Frame 775mm = $63.86

6x #NTM28-ACC/16719 NTM Prop Drive 28 Series Accessory Pack = $11.10
1x #387000003/26588 MultiWii PRO Flight Controller w/MTK GPS Module = $64.99
1x #TX-9X-M1/8991 Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 1) (v2 Firmware) = $59.99

1x #Tube-297g/6717 Large box and Packing 297g = $0.00
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have also decided that im going to scrap the multiwii pro and use a naza m setup instead, for the sake of less hassel and not having to mess around with pids..

I am happy to receive critique and options and what I can change to improve.

thanks and look forward to hear from you all.

Regards
Ronan

so I changed the motors for Turnigy Multistar 3508-640Kv 14Pole Multi-Rotor Outrunners, they were much more expensive but i think will be better suited?

does anyone know if the H.A.L frame is able to accept 14"blades ?

I hope i have made the right decison with these motors as there much lower speed kv and should give me more flight time.

Sure, why not?
it depends whether you want to use the dome and also how
is your electronics spread around the centerplate.
I am using 13" now and still there is enough clearance so 14" would not be a problem.

That looks pretty good. You can also replace the arms with the carbon fibre talon 2 arms to get more length (and lighten the whole thing).

Depending on your money situation, I'd seriously look at getting the Taranis instead if you can afford it. The 9X is nice but you won't get failsafe from the receiver which means your FC likely won't be able to detect when you lose RC link and do something sensible. For that you typically get the DJT and D8R-II FrSky combo radio, but at that point I'd personally just buy the Taranis instead, you don't have to worry about the 9x backlight then either.

You may also want to look at getting the firmware update tool for the ESC's. Some of the older firmware versions had trouble with high pole count motors and losing sync. You can use an arduino to do the same thing if you already have one.

Also, good call on the motor change.

many thanks again

If you're going to do the 9xr and the DJT module I'd really recommend adding the extra for the taranis. It's a much better quality radio with significantly more features, and while you may not need them initially, having them available will give you many more options. On top of that all the telemetry is integrated and alarms can be programmed in the radio itself. To get that with the 9xr it means soldering and reflashing the radio

The CF booms are here

If this is your first quad, do NOT get CF props, you'll destroy a good number of props before you get proficient and CF props are far to expensive to learn on . HK's CF reinforced props are great value, stiffer than the normal plastic ones but only a dollar or so more. I'd start with these and these (CW and CCW)

Finally, if you haven't already make sure you use blue loctite on anything that's threaded and metal (the nuts holding the props on, the screws holding the motors on etc)

Yes, but also make sure you do not let the blue loctite touch anything plastic.

hi, thanks for the replies,

I think I will just stick with the 9xr for now, I can upgrade at a later date..

thanks for the props recommendation, do those come balanced or will i need to balance those myself?

I actually have some medium blue strenght thread lock in my toolkit which I can use, might be few years old but im sure it still up to the job.

really looking forward to getting started on the build, will post my progress for you guys to see and comment.

Thanks

I've never got balanced props from HK, even the full CF ones I bought needed a piece of tape on them

hi everyone, just little update,

I have received everything now, and will be starting my build in the coming days,

I am waiting for the turnigy 5800mah 4s batteries to arrive yet though.

I have been reading around and it seems the motor mounts are a little weak on these? does anyone know if I can use mounts of a different multi?

also what could you recommend a safe charger to get? price doesnt matter.

thanks

Plenty of people claim the motor mounts are weak, but I've never had any issue except with a single crash when I destroyed 2 props and bent a mount, however even then I could just straighten out the mount and it was fine *shrug*

I'm not sure any charger is really any safer than any other once you get into anything larger than a single cell. As long as it can balance then you should be fine. Always charge in balance mode at 1C and you shouldn't have any problem unles syou've damaged your LiPos
