50" Cessna 182 in depron

I thought I'd post a few pix of my new scratch project, a Cessna Skylane in 6mm depron. She's almost ready to go, just need to finish up the LG fairings and front oleo strut, finish up the windows and solder up the ESC. I'd hoped to maiden this weekend but the weather gods have other ideas!

Here's a few quick pix...

Beautiful job on that!

It looks better than most of the balsa/monokote ARF Cessnas (and better than a lot of people's results from kits)

Gonna post the plans?
(or send in plans + construction article to Modle Aviation or Flying Models or...)

Here's the vital statistics:

50" wingspan
Speed 400 geared 2.1:1
GWS 9050 prop
21 oz
control: elevator/aileron

It's loosely based on Dave Blum's beautiful plans scaled to 133%. It's a basic box fuselage, more complex parts (cowl, wheel fairings) are laminated blocks sanded to shape. The lights come from Curtek. I cold-formed the airfoil top-surface to shape, then sheeted the bottom with more depron, then sanded to shape...they are surprisingly rigid and strong.

thanks FH! Dave's plans are commonly available, and they are really quite nice. I just scaled them up on an HP plotter near my desk at work and cut the three views from it, not much to it! This is my second depron project and I gotta say, this stuff is a real joy to work with.

I'll post more pix as I finish up some of the details...looks like I have a lot of time thanks to this lovely spring weather, ha.

CzechSix,

Beautiful work! I've been planning on doing the 182 in depron for a while but didn't know where to start. Keep us posted!

Im working on a 195 from Earl Stahl plans and then a 172 from Fiddlers green thanks to Vyceroy.

I can only hope they look 1/2 as good as yours

Thanks for the comments guys!

Gary, go for it! I just started cutting parts and kept going till it looked about right.

Noodle, actually there's no paint. I went to my local sign shop and got a few feet of self-adhesive sign vinyl, the stuff they usually run through a digital cutter. It's micro thin, the adhesive is permanent yet repositionable and it even negotiates compound curves. It comes in just about every color you could ask for and it's cheap too! Awesome stuff.

Jake, sounds like you have some cool projects. Actually I used the fiddler's green window template as a rough guide for my windscreen, then cut it to shape in place. I'm not real happy with the way it came out, so I might revisit it. For the windows I used acetate sheets (for overhead projectors) that I raided from the office supply closet. The transparent glass didn't look right so I applied some light auto-tint film directly to it and the result was much better. I think heat gun would have been useful but I don't have one...plus it might be a dicey proposition around the depron, it gets soft pretty quick. I did the side windows last night, I'll snap some photos and post an update in a bit.

If it ever stops raining I'll definitely post some flight video (and try not to embarass myself).
