FPV aerobatics?

Hola!

My first day on the RCG!!! A little about myself, I am a long time RC pilot, and full scale pilot. I tend to fly a lot of 3d with my heli's and fixed wings, and over the last year and a half I have ove heavily into FPV, with most of it being fixed wing (foam wings, and sky hunter) for range ~10km, and 250 size quad for short range fun.

I am thinking about strapping my FPV equipment inside one of my 3D planes, but I am concerned with losing orientation and a very expensive ship (when compared to all of my foamies).

Does anyone have experience and/or tips?

Use the horizon.
Start high enough to recover.
An OSD might be helpful.

Recommend a head tracker and pan&tilt on the flight camera, so you can do
the same thing full scale aerobatic pilots do, look out over the wing, when you're
pointed at the sky, and so forth.
Plenty of examples on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...+3d+aerobatics

I have similar experience as you and it is a LOT of fun to do FPV touch and goes. Orientation is the biggest item. I have to continuously remind myself where in the pattern am I. It took a while to find the key points for base turns etc and the landing looks way rougher than it actually is! I'd love a head tracker but I just use a fixed camera.

It is also hard to get a feel for altitude at times so an OSD would greatly help until you can set the glide path. Once you have an aimpoint, its relatively straight forward.

Currently I'm setting up a 30cc gasser. I don't mind the shake. The picture is usable but I'm sure I can get it smoothed out - going to try a gyro based gimbal on it!

Killer Thanks Daemon and stanordave!

I take it that I should most likely go with an IMAC or other slightly heavier aircraft, rather than a full on 3D plane? Seems scale aerobatics are definitely a more wise idea than 3D with FPV.... I would assume that a heavier, and slower reacting airframe would be better.

I do it with a Katana. Though I am not a skilled 3D pilot at all.

pan and tilt a necessity, yes

The Katana is an awesome machine, but addng 20% to the AUW with FPV goodies does impact performance. I think the cam/P&T also diminished the responsiveness of the rudder. Unlike so many FPV foamies, the proper 3D plane flies straight and responds instantly without any mush - which in some ways makes flying easier.

There is the usual challenge of flying as with other scale-cockpit FPV flying. The wings obscure the ground view so it is harder to judge distance from ground on landing - easy to stall from 4 feet. Fwd view also obscured somewhat. The planes are immensely fragile compared to typical FPV foamy.

earlier on I also tried doing it with a pitch ladder (RVOSD) to help with doing hovering and vertical manoevres when you can't see anything but sky. But I disliked the cluttered display

Of course I also just do aerobatics with my Skyhunter too..
First couple minutes of this one has some fun vertical stuff.
Pushing the Skyhunter hard in Montana (5 min 1 sec)

The GoPro camera doesn't tilt, but the flight camera does, which is useful.

Looks like the immelman and reverse cuban 8's could use a little work.
Did a reverse cuban 8 in the Skyhunter vid above at 0:56. The nose
shouldn't drop toward the ground at all through the half roll on the upline.
This is also one of my favorite aerobatic moves with a slope sailplane.

BTW, saw this one posted in the regular video thread last week, and it reminded
me of this thread.

I agree with that. Some of the maneuvers I did just once or twice, so there's lots of room for improvement.
