What F5D ship for $600 or less

Hi guys, I thought this would be worth a new thread rather than asking about specific models on there own threads. I am looking at buying an F5D model for non competitive flying at my field. I do not want to be spending anymore than $600 on a model. From what I have seen this leaves me with the SUSA Jolt, Swist and the Viper.

Setup wise I would like to be going over 200mph but not with the loudest setup around, I don't mind a little bit of screaming but would prefer something easy on the ears (too much noise gets complaints at the field). I have seen people mentioning the Mega 16/30/2 on 5cell but cannot remember the prop, Kontronik Kira 480/31 5.2:1, Koch 8.5 x 23 prop on 5cell, Mega 16/25/2 on 5cell and 4.75x4.75. can anyone think of any other successful power plants suitable for the speed I would like to achieve?

Although I have experience building models and I am very particular with builds I would like something that doesn't take forever to build or a model with the motor mount already in place as I would be afraid of messing this up.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any help.

May be of some use,

Theres a bunch of setups off the shelf now that'll break 200mph, depends on how much you want to spend and what manufacturer you like

Thanks for that Jackomeister. I do not have a preference to any brand of motor choice as this is all very new to me, maybe something from the mega motors as these seem a relatively cheap and reliable setup. I am using their 16/15/3 in a miro urban voodoo at the moment.

I would be looking at a max of $300 for the motor and everyone seems to rate the ice 100 for choice of esc.

It would be appreciated if someone could send me some motor choices so that I could do more reading through threads etc to see what one would suite me best.

Many thanks

It'd be a Swist or X plane for me, Voodoo's 16-35-1.5RE, 4.2 gb and 6s setup seems to haul, and it's nice to have different options of what size prop to use, as well as being reasonably quiet.

Thanks very much Feefo, I have just came home from work but while there I decided the swist is definitely for me! I was also 99% sure on getting a the mini pyro motor because on this thread; http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1657122 Voodoo was rating it so much and I have seen him talk about it in other threads as well.

I have seen this video before while searching through Voodoos YouTube videos and did really like it but I have only found one place that has the motor (and I don't even know if it can be shipped to the UK) and I haven't the faintest idea where to get the gearbox from and also what make of gearbox, so if someone could help with either that would be great.

Voodoo, if you read this; what size pack are you using and how long do you get of flight time? you mentioned in a pm that gearbox's get hot, how is this one for temp? and you have flown this model on both power setups and which one do you prefer. I will send a pm in a few days if you don't see it.

Having just quickly read through that thread about the Pyro's, the Mega with a gb got away with a 100a Ice lite, the Pyro needed a much bigger esc. Maybe something to consider?

Thanks ever so much for your help. on the mega site it mentions that all the 16/35 motors are specials and not in stock but custom manufacturing is possible. So I think I will send them an email and see how long this usually takes. On their site there is the option to pair it with their own 4.3:1 gearbox, would this be alright or does it have to be a 4.2? This is my first plane with over squared props so its all very new to me.

Regarding the requirement for a larger esc, I sent Voodoo a pm a few days back and he said that he has had fantastic results with the Himodel 150A so was thinking of pairing this with the Mini Pyro.

I haven't tried the Mega gearboxes, but personally I'd go with either the Kontronik or Reisenauer. Someone posted that their Mega gearbox failed at about 800w IIRC. And the Mega gearboxes need the shaft cutting on the motor similar to a pinion, means the motor needs to be returned to Mega if you ever wanted to just use it without a gearbox.

If that esc works well that's a good option, certainly cheaper than the CC stuff but I do like the logging features of the Ice/Edge esc's

All the planes you mentioned are from SUSA, is that where you're going to get it from?

You could order from AJ Aeromodels http://ajaeromodels.com/ , there was a thread where a guy ordered from these and had problems, but they now take Paypal so you would have someone to fall back on if there was a problem. It's a little cheaper than SUSA too.

Other option is Asia Pacific models http://www.apachobby.com/airplanes/e...ers/swist.html which works out the cheapest for the model.

You could order the Viper from Stratair http://www.stratair.com/Produktdetail.aspx?ArtId=696 and not worry about import duty (or the Excite or Demon too...)

Sorry not trying to change your mind, just showing you some options if you didn't know.

Ok thanks for the recommendation of Kontonik gearbox. I did not realise that they would fit. although in the description it says that the KPG 27 is available as 4.2 (The KPG27 is available in the translations 3.7:1, 4.2:1 and 5.2:1), but when ordering it says 4.3. should this matter?

http://www.hoelleinshop.com/Electric...=13444&p=13444

^ Is this the one you are referring to? I can machine an adapter plate at work which on their site it says is required (I don't want to order one which is no good for this motor unless someone knows what one will fit)

In the link below type 'Adapterflansch KPG 27' into the search bar and it gives the options for the KPG 27

The outrunner seems a much easier option but you have to mod the fuselage to get it in. and also a similar price once you add up the cost of gearbox and the shipping.

APM was about $75 IIRC, no idea what SUSA will charge. It's possible a model from Asia will get through customs un-noticed, but it might not. I don't know whether duty would be charged coming from Russia, it should because they're not in the EU, but again it might get through un-noticed too. Import duty will definitely be charged for goods from the US tho. Everyone I've ever spoke to has said the same about goods from the US if over about $50.

If you didn't know there are options that can be added to any motor like custom colour cans, different end shields and bearings. If you look at the specs for the 16-50 you'll see what I mean as you scroll down the page. Shields and bearings will add a little to the cost, I think can colour is free but could be wrong.

I like the Mega's, and the 16-35-1.5RE could be used on direct drive on something else at a later date (FJU for example). Maybe a slightly more versatile motor as you could always use a different gearbox on it to swing a bigger prop.

Not sure if you want to consider this as an option, but the 16-50-2C F5D (1270kv) motor is about to be installed on a X plane, slightly cheaper than a Pyro and no gb to buy either. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...postcount=3804
