Wemtoec Mini-fan 480 with mega 16/15/2

I am building an EJF bob-e-cat and assembled the power system today. I had issues with the 16/15/2 getting really hot with no load testing in less than a 30 second run. Temp got up to almost 200F which is way too hot for this motor. I thought there was something wrong with the motor but someone in power systems suggested it might be running too hot because of the no load setup. I installed it into the minifan 480 unit and did some testing. Wide open on 3S will pull 42Amps which is higher than the motors maximum rating. But with throttle management I should be ok. I ran about 20 seconds at 35 amps and shut it down and did a temp measurement. It was about 130F. I am not sure if this is normal or not. I think the other mega I have runs hot too but can't remember. Anyone here running this combo on a jet and can comment on the temps.

esc is a phoenix 60 with latest software.

thanks,

Brendin

42 amps is about the right thing.

stuffs that help

1/ low timing on ESC
2/ throttle management
3/ heat sink for motor

No fear, brendin. You have the correct items for use, with the /2 Mega. Adjust the timing to suit your needs. The Megas are highly under rated. I run the /2 at 45A constantly. Even the /3 will run at 40A.

One concern to think of. The minifan has a reverse cooling. In other words, it draws air behind the rotor to cool the mtr. With the Megas having cooling holes, when wrapping, with tape to center the mtr to fit the minifan holder, do not have any cooling slots outside the mtr. This will force cool the mtr inside through the cooling holes. Many have run this mtr at 50+A. I have not. 45-50 max, if it recieves proper cooling.

Thanks guys...I am going for a lighter setup. I've got a 2650Mah 25C pack that weighs 205grams. I talked to Robert at EJF and he said I could easily double up the packs and run them in parallel and still be within a good weight range.

Is there a secret to tightening the nut that holds the fan to the motor shaft on the minifan?

Take a dremel tool with the cut-off wheel. And grind a slot in the adapter end to recieve a screw driver. Put the nut on first. To clean the thread, when removing the nut.

I was able to center mine without tape...didn't think to use it. Maybe I should use tape to imobilize it as the only thing holding it is the screws in the front.

All it would take is a hard landing, or the mtng screws to loosen, and the fan will be history. Another good material is alum foil tape. It conducts heat better. Good for mtrs with no holes.

I have a 16/15/3 I want to use in the mini fan, what size of battery pack should I use for it for decent performance. I want to put it in the Sapac Grippen.
Thanks,
Gary

Gary, you can use the /3 in the minifan with a 4s 20c+ pack, and run wide open for the duration of the flight. Depending on the pack, 33-37A @ 400+W. I have used a 5s. But then your into 40+A. And requires a 50A ESC with good cooling to handle reduced power settings. But the burst are wonderful. And always run a cool-down after flight. As the HET, Mega, ARC, short can mtrs (Mega 15mm rotor, ARC, HET can length 35mm, all the sam) they cannot use a heat sink. There is not enough mtr exposed. You need the longer 25mm rotor or 47mm can for sink use.

The /3 is a very durable mtr. I have one thats been (ab)used for 6yrs. The other is only 4yrs old. Still very strong cogging, as when new.

Dude, why recommend getting 20C packs
It is yesteryear technology

Get the late 25-30C Pack by all means
to make the difference
For EDF stuffs, we always want the best,
the latest technology available out there.

3T, 4S 25-35C 2200 lipo, Minifan.
And be happy, That is it.

And yes, Others and I always use heatsink on those
16/15/x motors, also with similar size motors.
Been there, done that so many times.
