Painting Solartex

Hello Guys

I'm just about ready to paint my Bucker, will be using the yellow and black color scheme. i cover with yellow solartex, stitch and tape. No sure about what paint to use. the Bucker is shiny so i'm thinking in use base color for yellow and black trim than use clear coat, but i need some help in what brand to use. The Bucker has solartex for covering as well aluminum and fiberglass that needs primer, I appreciate any help, thanks

You might try self etching primer for the metal and glass parts. Paint available from auto stores in spray cans. Yellow is a VERY hard color to get to cover well without painting a white base first. By using yellow covering first, you are a step ahead of the game. I am going through the same thing on my build. I have white and need to paint camo. I will use either Rustolium or latex paint. I plan to scuff the surface with a Scotchbrite pad-fine grit- then paint. I will wipe it down before painting with either alcohol or paint prep. This is all new to me as far as painting Solartex but the last plane I built -DR 1- I brushed latex on the covering with a foam brush and had good luck. I fly electric so fuel residue is not a issue with me.
Good luck.

Klass Kote will stick to SolarTex without any kind of primer necessary.

I've done 3 planes in Solartex and painted with rustoleum. No primer used, just straight from the rattle can.

It's got a real heavy pigment, so you need a light touch. It's real easy to spray too much.

Oh yeah.... I'm familiar with that one. I've been drooling over it a long time. I'll have to buy a new car to transport it (and probably a new shop to build it). What a gorgeous plane!

It is a big boy, i got scared myself when i put all together . If you see the size of my shop, you will be surprise, very small . Very nice kit, went together very good and the hardware that came with is top notch, they did a great job with this one. I use poly tone for paint and poly tone for clear, came out very nice.

I covered my 1/6 scale Sig Cub with Cub yellow Solartex. It was dead matte looking. I sprayed it with satin clear Krylon, too matte looking. Shot it with gloss clear Krylon, looked more scalish but shows dirty marks from handling. Smudges do not wash off well Not wanting to add more to all-up weight. I'm living with it. Maybe another brand of clear coat would work better than Krylon.

Solartex maker in UK recommends their own clear coat, not avialable in the US.

It's easier to use Natural Solartex and paint the entire model, then there's no need for a clear coat to seal against dirt.

Krylon is near the bottom of the barrel, as aerosol paint goes.

Ace brand aerosols spray better, and lay down, smooth.

I prefer Rustoleum, though. The aerosols spray well, and the paint has a higher gloss. The penalty is in that it takes longer to dry, than the two brands mentioned above.

Tom,
How does the ace brand hold up to gas? Just curious, I haven't used it yet.

I haven't got that far, yet.

I did spray a friend's Midwest Super Stearman with it, and it's powered by a gasser, but we haven't had a chance to run the engine yet. He just completed the model last week.

I painted my electric Alien Aircraft Taylorcraft with Ace brand aerosols. Here are a few pics.
