SR Batteries X250

This plane isnt really a classic pattern plane so to speak, but it does closely ressemble the Kaos so I thought I would post this here. It has a 36" wingspan and is laser cut. I have been building on this the past few evenings a little at a time and it is turning out to be a nice looking plane. The laser parts were cut very well and everything fits together tight. I plan on using a EFlite Park 480 910 kv motor and a EFlite Pro 35 amp ESC with all Hitec HS56 servos. Here are some pictures of my progress this far.

a bit more work done last night, started on the wing. I thought it was neat how the wing jig that was included in the box actually incorporates the two carbon spares in the wing as the leading edge and the center spare. Seems to be quite strong. Anyway this thing is going together like a puzzel pieces, perfect fit with everything. Here are some pics of the wing.

You're going to love flying it. Yes, it's very Kaos-like. Here's the one my Dad built. These are from the maiden flight, Sept 21, 2004.

It hangs in my shop now, and the orange covering needs to be replaced (baggy from age).

BTW, that 480 will be MAJOR overpower!

Andy,
Your Dad's plane looks nice, I havnt decided on a color scheme yet but your pictures are very eye catching. I am planning on putting two servors for the airlerons instead of the one but that shouldnt be a big deal to do. What power set up would you reccomend? I was going to use the 480 because I had one laying around. Would a 400 450 be a better choice?

Blake,

That is a brilliant wing design concept! Given the basic lack of sheeting, it is the main structural element.

I'm going to have to see how I can incorporate that into some other design...

Nice build.

SR owner Larry Sribnick once suggested a brushless replacement for a Speed 400. If I'm not mistaken, it was the Axi 2212/20 which is comparable to a Park 400. In my opinion, a Park 480 would be a bit big, but its up to you.

Well sounds like I should re-evaluate my motor options. I was thinking with the suggested weight of the airframe being 24oz and at a 150watts/lb flying performance that I was looking to get, I would need a motor capable of 225 watts. The park 480 910kv motor that I have was capable of up 250 watts/lb so I was just going to use what I had. However, I may look into getting a bit smaller motor if I cant find one that I already have laying around somewhere.

Blake,

My Pico is 30 oz all up with 3s 2100. A little lighter with ultralight Lipos but it doesn't balance with them (until I change the elevator linkage).

I put a 28 mm can motor in it capable of 300W. I have it propped with an 8x4 with an input of 280W. It would fly straight out of my hand if released vertically. Probably too much for such a little model.

200-225W on a 7" prop might do the trick with an all up of 24 oz.

Thanks David,
I just order two motors today, both are the 28mm can motors and one is capable of 300W as well (which I will be using on a different model) and the other capable of 200W. I will try the 200W motor and see how it does and then see if I want to try to move up to the eflite 480. Looking forward to finishing this up though.

Not sure what color scheme I am going to do on this yet but was thinking somewhere along the lines of White/ light blue/ metallic Silver or Metallic Red.

A Park 400 would be good. As you can see in the photos, we have a 20mm can motor with a 3.6 gear ratio. On 2S 1300-ish pack it flies great.

You're going to be a lot lighter than the plane was then. Use a 2S 1300 instead of 8 NiMH 800's.

On the other hand, the X250 was designed in the NiCad days, so it can handle some extra weight. Even with a Park 480 and an appropriately sized LiPo pack, it would probably still be lighter than Larry's original NiCad setup, and way more powerful.

I have SR-250 and I am not sure the size motor but, you have to be careful with prop selection due to ground clearance.... I am running a 8" prop and it cuts a lot of grass! I am thinking you would like a high KV motor so that you can swing a smaller diameter prop.

I am thinking that as well, swinging a smaller prop for the ground clearance. However I could probably hand launch it and then land it regular if I used a larger diameter prop.

What size prop was it running in it's original form?

a 1020kv park 480 is very happy with a 10" prop.
