G'Day Joe
Looks like you have done it again, and found another interesting project. I must admit that the ''Jump '' could be a bit of a problem. so if there is any out there with a 3 view. would also be very interested in drawing a plan.

Chris I have some info on it and the best source is here
http://www.gyroplane.co/index.html
If I don't get any more info I will do the same as I did with the little wing and build a small foam test model then build a larger one based on lessons learned.
Jump would be nice but It looks like a lot off problems many have tried and had limited success or we would have heard.

Joe..........It doesn't look that difficult . I am sure that some one will come up with some info. Looks like some nice colour schemes around.

Joe,
Excellent choice. I started to draw one of these up a while back, I enlarged these views on a scanner.

Hope it is of use?

Regards

Rich

Hi Joe,
about two years ago I had built a model of the Umbaugh Air and Space U 18. I purchased a building plan with instructions on ebay. It was printed in the German hobby magazine of 1968. What I recognized first was the missing flexible rotor head and the incomplete rotor control.
My intention was to make jump take offs like the original and so I bought a two blade rotor head of an electric heli to achieve collective pitch.
My end result looked very good, but you guess it: it never flew . The engine was too far back and I had to add too much weight (a big lipo for the prerotator) in front. Therefore, the total weight was too high and the rotor diameter too low. The prerotator had not enough power. Jump take offs (and even normal flights) were just an illusion with this model.
If I ever would build a new model, I`ll make a direct control head (the RPG variant) and forget about jump take offs! The engine would have to be mounted more forward and the whole thing would have to be build much lighter.
I made 5 copies of the building plan. Perhaps they are helpful!

Wow nice job many thanks for the info it will be a big help I don't plan on trying jump take off but I like to build scale models
I think the first model to jump and fly is unlikely to be scale but never say never someone out there is probably working on it right now and I look forward to seeing it when it happens
Joe
Do you know if the German original flew?

Joe,
I don't think that the German original flew (very well), although there are photos in the building instruction. The rotor head is too simple (no flexibility) and there is no direct control, only fore and aft. Perhaps motor torque reacted the rotor forces, but with such a big model a stable flight is improbable with only rudder control. In the drawings a tank is missing and no comment is made about the center of gravity.

Many thanks for the very useful info I will do the same as I did with the Little Wing build a light foam type test model then try a larger scale version

Chris
What scale do you think you will build to?
If you get some drawings made can I can beta build with you I struggle to make plans and I usually build on the fly modifying my build as I go

Scale is a little early to predict. I am trying to copy the plans that have been posted and then modify them to our current knowledge. Unfortunately at the moment I am having problems with my printer. If I can draw some workable plans then I am happy to share with you.
