Blade 200 SRX Second ESC for Tail Motor

Ok, so I didn't write it up but I thought that we should have a thread just for this. I'm getting ready to do this and got lost trying to find all of the information that has been shared in the 200 SRX thread. So help a brother out here folks, post up your mod and results.
Thanks, farquward

Hey sweets nice write up! Now anyone that is about to do this has all of the information in one place, and it should be searchable too!

Nice work Steve! My parts should be in Wednesday so I can modify #1.

good idear here goes.... you can use any type of esc as long as it has simon k softwear( know simon k works ) but any mulit rota esc could work, high reaction speed req. if yours is pod and boom a 20 amp is plenty, if in a shell a 30 amp is ok or the 20 amp slim afro ( which is a 30 amp with smaller main wires ) have used the afro esc from hk and they work ( there are others which also work but i have not used them ). to see if your bird could be at risk remove the can from the tail motor and look at your motor windings , if they are not bright copper then you could be on the way to a fail. even if your windings are not bright , when you do the mod the windings will not get any worse . the mod takes about 10 mins with a soldering iron and some hear shrink

Here is my video with the Talon 15 in multi-rotor mode.

It is wired the same as sweets diagram shown above.

All of the gains are turned way down for testing, and I think that is why the cyclic was not
fully self-leveling.

200 SRX Dual ESC Hovering (Castle Talon 15 on tail) (4 min 32 sec)

Obviously I need to mess with gain settings some more, but overall it looks like a winner.

Even without much tuning it's already behaving much better than the stock ESC.

The random blips from the tail are completely gone.

The stock ESC tail output is flawed, without question.

I'm currently running 100% cyclic gain, 25% tail gain, 100% filtering and 150% throttle gain.

In the maiden hover video my cyclic gain and filtering were set too low.

The Talon 15 adds less than 5 grams, and there is plenty of power to spare at 150% throttle gain.

Here are my Castle Link software settings:

Here is our outdoor maiden flight.

The wind was gusting slightly - perfect conditions to test the new setup.

Still needs some gain tuning, but already it's far better than the stock ESC.

That would be my oldest son, and best pilot.

Unfortunately, he is also the best camera operator, so I flew while he filmed.

200 SRX Dual ESC ( CC Talon 15) Wiring Schematic

I have made a color correct schematic for the technically challenged.

The only change to the schematic is you choose the red wire from either
one ESC or the other to feed the RX, but not both.

If you use the Castle to feed your system, your system will run at 5.5 volts instead of 5 volts,
giving your servos a small (10%) speed boost.

The Talon 15 also has superior BEC current handling capabilities (3 Amps continuous, 8 Amps peak)
which means less chance of brownouts and more stable power.

Just to be sure, I measured idle current draw using both BEC configurations, and got 132 mA at 5 volts
and 135 mA at 5.5, typical measurements for a properly functioning system.

Mine has been running at 5.5 volts (RX power fed from Talon 15) since the install without any problems.

Yesterday I received my tail motor esc which I will install in the weekend to prevent this from happening ever again, I hope.

So Iíve read a lot of ESC manuals, and all of them state that itís advised to calibrate the esc. Thatís being done by connecting it to the receiver and with some stick movements entering the calibration mode. Then itís said to use full throttle. So my question here is; if I want to calibrate my new esc to the tail rotor, do I use full right rudder instead of full throttle? Seems logical, since only the signal cable is connected to the rudder outlet on the receiver. Plus of course it's the tail motor's esc.

Others had trouble with the Castle, although mine is going strong.

I recommend the Afro ESC.
