There is a thread about the Turnigy Gliderdrive motors, and from what I read it seemed that most people are happy with them. Because of the style of them they are heavier than a standard outrunner. Price is reasonable from HK US wharehouse. Might be something to look into.

I have a Turnigy we bought to try in the 3-meter and one other project, but I don't have any test data yet. Looked OK, though, at least for sport flying.

re gearboxes:
If the motor is fast or the plane is slow, gearboxes make sense. The old Master Airscrew motor/gearbox/prop combination could handle a 52 oz 2 meter! With an 05 ferrite can motor!

re small props:
I've seen adequate climb on a two meter from a 6X3 on a Speed 400, direct drive! Admittedly it was only around 20 oz. I'm not claiming the prop would be efficient, though.
