Importance of Statically Balancing your Multi Rotor Itself..

We've all heard about the importance of balancing props/motors on your multi rotor heli. It is important and should be done.

But, what about getting your CG right and balancing your Multi Rotor Heli itself.... The FC dynamically balances your MR in flight, but what about making it a little easier on the FC by statically balancing (at least as close as possible) before it's flight.

It doesn't seem to be a big topic of discussion and I wonder why...at least to me, it sounds like another important step in building/flying your MR

Opinions on...

- How important is it to statically balance a MR Heli..?
- Are there tools to help?
- Why isn't this discussed more?

Thanks,
-mike-

I always statically balance my copter before I fly. I just lift it on the X and Y axis' and if It tilts one way or the other I adjust the camera around (since thats really the only thing that varies) until it's balanced. Seems to make it fly better then too!

The question is how do you check your quads CG? What methods are people using? I ask because I have no idea how I would do it. Using BirdsEyeProd is probably fine if your quad uses the + orientation but I dont see how it would work under X mode.

It should work about the same. I am flying an octo so I can pick it up in the "X" config and it will still lean one way or the other if it's off. It may not be as noticeable however.

I have been thinking about doing this with my Hexa in X config and have come up with this:

suspend multirotor from centeral point by single attachment point and balance acordingly covering all aspects X axis, Y axis and all inbetween? (use small bubble level to ensure accuracy).

I had thought of balancing on point below but landing gear would get in the way?

Once ballanced it would also be a good time to calibrate sensors as when copter is balanced it would be perfect time to do so!

What are your thoughts?

Balancing props and motors = (eliminating a source of agitation to system) cleaner signal to and from FC, better response, better video and just a over all quieter multicopter.

Balancing CG = (balancing load) less work for the FC, less amps and more efficient use of the energy stored in the Lipo.

I think the subject doesn't arise much because the measure of waisted energy is probably fairly unnoticable when CG is only alittle off.

I quickly suspend the multicopter from the point of CG and distribute weight as best as possible during first set-up and very periodically check it.
