A radio controled Rowboat

Hey folks!
been kinda absent a while from the boards, life in the beer mines have been rather fast and furious over the past couple of years.

catching up a bit, I did not abandon the hobbies, I've just been lurking a bit. Also the brewery I work for has been sponsoring the local Model Yacht clubs regional regattas in RG65 and Seawind classes.

back to the matter at hand, I wanted to show off my ongoing project.
some of y'all might have remembered me inquiring about rowboats..

I have finally locked down the mechanics for a scale rowboat build.

The hull itself is the now discontinued Midwest Products Rowing Dinghy, Kit #948.

the scale is 1:6 which is apperntly the same scale as those 12" GI Joe dol... eer action figures, so there is a widely available supply of scale accessories I can use to fit out the model.

the mechanics of the row boat are shown in the pictures below, but for a brief description, there are two servos controlling each oar.. one servo pulls the oar, the other servo dips the oar. the control of the two servos is coordinated via a stand alone servo mixer that takes the control inputs from the RX and translated them to the servo movements. those movements are translated to the oars via a T shaped set of push rods with ball ends.

the servo controller is called the "rowbot" and was developed by a gentleman by the name of Alan tedder, teller? in the UK.. the Email I have for him is:

alan@rowbots.co.uk

the controller cost me at the time $35uk, the rate of exchange brought that up to $78us... so beware

anyways.. it took me a while to get around to finishing the project and over the past few weeks I wrapped up the mechanics of the rowboat and this thread is meant to show the build up to now, and finishing it out.

future plans are to finish out the boat:

Hide the mechanics and electronics with scale appropriate props and gear

make a rower. this will be an 1:6th action figure modified to appear that he is doing the rowing.

Personalization!

We have the technology! I can make a 3D scan of my head.. I know a guy with a 3D printer.. I intend to put my head on the rower. and hopefully articulate it as well considering I have two extra channels on the remote for pitch and yaw of the rowers head.

in the mean time, check out the progress so far

Very Nicely built.

And for a second I thought maybe you were standing on the bank madly
circling your joy sticks in wild frenzy to get the servos to operate in a timely manner.

Cool

Can the "rowbot" controller row backwards also?

That is super cool BeeGee!

I saw it trying to row in reverse, but it didn't look too efficient compared to forward?

So you get the rowing controller in the kit, but have to fabricate everything else?

At one of our regattas years ago there was a gentleman who brought a rowboat like you are building. He used a computerized radio for the basic movements and would make adjustments to the timing to steer it.

The controller was purchased on its own Knot, and it does tow in all directions. Very well. I'll get some more video today

okay...hopefully this video will help to show off the flexibility of the Rowbot servo mixer.
the TX I am using is a standard issue cheapo mode 2, 4channel 2.ghz stick radio. I have the X,Y hooked up to the elevator/aileron stick for the self centering. one could easily hook up F/W to throttle, and L/R to rudder on a regular 2 channel surface radio. I just wanted the boat go to "at rest" when I let go of the stick.

the radio I'm using is a E-sky ek2-0404g which a member of the RMYC gave to me. as far as I can tell it is abandon ware so I am going to dedicate this radio to this boat. I'm going to use the left stick for articulation of the rower figure.

It does look rather ghastly without someone at the oars.

The rower is coming next folks, as described in the first post.
this build will be mostly about fitting the boat out after the mechanics were sorted out..

I've actually had people else where say it looks like an oarsmen waterbug when operating
