Pictures of my new Omega 1.8 !!!

Attached is a picture of my Omega 1.8 sailplane that I recently completed. I've had several flights on it now and I love the way it flys! It thermals great and penetrates exceptionally well especially for such a light plane.

The fuselage came unpainted so I painted it with Top Flite's Lustre Kote (Metallic Blue). I also repainted the canopy aluminum since the default blue clashed with the metallic blue fuse. I painted the spinner using Testor's enamel since LustreKote won't stick to most plastics. The paint added no more than 1/4 ounce to the total weight.

I have other posts related to this plane but here are the specs:

72.5 " wingspan
465 sq. in wing area
All-up weight 23 oz for a wing loading of 7.1 oz sq. ft.

Graupner Speed 400 w/4:1 inline gear box
Graupner Cam 11x8 prop w/Litespinner (29mmm)
JETI 250 controller (supports BEC w/4servos!)
DMA 7x600AE battery
4 Hitec HS55 servos
Hitec Super Slim receiver
Hitec Eclipse 7 transmitter

The plane climbs at about 500 ft per minute.

Here's a close-up that I hope will encourage you to paint your Omega! (or any other unfinished plane you may have)

Excellent Job! Did the wing come pre covered like that or did you trim it out too?

Don -- The wing was already covered. I was lucky to find paint that matched the covering!

Jim,
Nice job, it looks great. What kind of climb angle does it have, and do you know how many amps it's pulling (on the ground)?

Thanks,
Lenny

According to MotoCalc the climb angle is about 24 degrees and the amp draw is about 9 amps. That seems consistent with the observed climb angle. If I change to a 14x8 prop the amps will go up to 11.5 and the climb angle to 26 degrees. I could probably get a bit more performance with 8 cells but I need to keep it at 7 cells to meet the requirements of our club's Speed 400 LMR contests.

The fuselage paint is Top Flite's LustreKote (Metallic Blue). The covering on the wing I believe is Oracover so I'm not sure if it is the same blue as Monokote Transparent Blue although it looks pretty close.

Thanks everyone for your kind compliments. I really enjoy this hobby and I get a kick out of sharing my joy with others. Up until a few months ago I had been out of the hobby for over 8 years due to a divorce followed by years of chronic illness. It sure is a kick to be back!!! Building and flying this plane is so rewarding not only because it's fun but also that for me it a symbolic victory over adversity.

What a great hobby this is!!!
