Help!
Is This Plane Any Good for Slope Soaring?

Hello,

I'm interested in slope soaring. I have a decent hill that I could use for soaring, and I need small and light aircraft, as the hill isn't that big. I saw the flying wing on Hobby King called the Bonsai and I see many slope soaring flying wings. Would this Bonsai do good as a slope soaring plane?

I'm thinking of pairing it up with a small RX pack,

and a receiver for my DX6i.

Will this work well or not?

Thank you!

I've seen these fly ,they are nothing special but they do fly ,and if your only after a light air wing these are uber light so get past about 8 knots of breeze and they are going backward.
For the money why not buy 2 and glue them together at the tip and have a flying W

LOL a flying "W" definitely would be interesting. I'm glad that they're able to fly in light winds, as that's all that will be present much at my hill!

Thank you!

Dan:

The Bonsai is a very small glider (600mm). Slope gliders this small can be difficult to fly... especially in very light winds. They just don't fly as well (and as smoothly) as larger wings... especially if you are not an experienced slope flyer. Gear has to be very small/light or you are going to have high wing loading.

This "combat" wing (link below) is a bit larger (1 M) and might make a better soaring wing. If I was building one, I would use micro servos, the smallest receiver possible, and a four cell AAA receiver pack. I would cover the wing with iron on film; but use with the lightest covering I could find... like some 1.7 or 3 mil laminating film (regular Ultracote or similar would be fine as well). I fly several 36" wings (RiteWing TL 36, Weasel) at 11.5 to 12 ounces. They will fly most any small slope in a light wind.

Good luck,

Dawson

The wing will work ok but like it been stated before only in light wind. if you have a small hill try one of these
http://www.dream-flight.com/weasel.html
http://www.dream-flight.com/alula.html
the Alula flys in 2 to 10 mph wind with ease and the weasel will work in all kinds of wind

All the above suggestions will do what's required on your small hill with light air the only difference will be $$$$ foe example a good DLG will do it with ease but you'll need to part with a minimum of $300 ,that make the $21 sound like a good try it out to see if it works plan to me.

Double that price for shipping from HK and the other options begin to look better. +1 on the Alula or Halfbad.

HK is a good source for inexpensive servos (hxt500) and Rx (spektrum knock-offs) though. Shipping is cheap enough for a few small items but anything bulky or long and international shipping gets pricey.

Yeah, HK shipping is harsh. Well, I had $3.40 in bonus points, so it turned out to only be about $17 for shipping from China to Connecticut, which really isn't that bad. However, HK has been backed up for a while, too.

Thanks everybody for your help. In the future I hope to get a nice DLG kit. If the Bonsai ends up not working with my hill, I have a motor and ESC that I could throw on it for some power.

if you live in the USA why not just buy a better slope soarer in your own land.

e.g.
http://leadingedgegliders.com/eppGli...PrairieDog.php
http://canuckengineering.com/new/cat...ck-engineering
etc

or an Alula or Weasel as most likely mentioned above.

Let us know how it works out as a slope plane.

I just got a box of servos & Rx's & things from HK yesterday.....only 10 days from ordering to my doorstep. Not bad. Now I can assemble my Alulas (Aluli?)
