This is the funniest video on cars I have ever seen:

How DS works

Much has been written on how DS works, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I've long thought that DS is simply converting angular acceleration to linear acceleration. The extra airspeed needed to bring about lift, and consequently, angular and linear acceleration, is brought about by the sheer gradient.

DS is the process of bouncing a glider off two air masses moving in opposite directions of each other.

But the plane isn't bouncing off the air in the sense of a ball, the plane accelerates because of the increased lift caused by the increased airspeed and the mean and peak velocities continue to increase each lap as long as this energy is preserved during the lap. This lift is used to accelerate the plane in angularly, then linearly. Sort of like accelerating something swinging on a string, the letting it go (hammer throw for instance).

And the air masses don't need to move opposite of each other and you don't need a rotor either. If you had a backside that the air moved over in a laminar fashion that would be preferable even (much smoother). The two air masses just need to be moving at different relative speeds.

BTW, Aerogance, I need to order up a JW when I finish my current build. I learned to DS with one 13+ years ago and need another one. Loved that thing!

apparently a guy in Australia a long time ago DS'd a real glider between normal air and an inversion layer. Not the same as slope DS, but still extracting energy from two masses of air moving at different speeds.
I think the secret to why slope DS is so fast is that the glider is always flying either across the wind or down wind.

I've done DS from just the front side of a slope where a hill has a flat before heading up again. There is a calm pocket that can be DSed if the wind isn't too strong.

I'm sure some of you have seen this, but I just stumbled across it this evening:

Dynamic Soaring USAF (4 min 16 sec)

Not sure when it was filmed, but Kyle P would know!
