Build Log
1/600 scale Airfix Bismark conversion. lots of pics!(and 1/700 Arizona)

So I finally decided to do a semi proper build log of my newest project. Its another plastic conversion like I did with my fletcher but this time it will be a lot more scale. Lights scale rudder and since the haul is wide enough no keel! It will be powered by 3 air hog aero ace motors. I cant promise this will be a fast build log, or a slow one, since I usually get through my projects in bursts. I am going to post what I have done so far... nothing super fantastical fairly simple construction. I hadn't posted it before because I didn't have the parts and I did not want to post something that I wasn't going to finish. But my esc is on order as well as the BIG battery. I will link some of it up so you can see what else I plan on using.

The hardware I have ordered and am waiting on or using.
I want to hug the person who designed these!
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ro_Motors.html the speed controller that I plan on using when it gets here....
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...gle_Cell_.html The huge battery I got for this sucker... The fletcher gets about 40min of run time on 130mah... but I need so much weight to ballast this ship... plus the lights I figured I would just go huge.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...c_0_075kg.html The amazing little servo I am using I bought it for my spruce goose project... derailed for now. I didn't realize how smooth this little guy was till it tested it out on this project.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Sat_Port_.html And the receiver I am using on this system running on 1s With a cap to keep glitches down.

I will try uploading images in chronological order, but this is everything I have done so far.

I am going to try to upload pictures to the website.

Here s a video of the rudders in action!http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...2#post19843117

I just got in the shapeways screws, they look amazing. After work today I ll start mounting them up. Maybe do a in pool test run . Still waiting on some parts I ordered a few weeks back from hobbyking, the tracking number say's they are coming from AUS which is kinda odd. I also started soldering the led's what a pain. I ll try to update tonight with pics.

Edit: Sorry I was late got hurt working on my car. Pics as promised. Mail came by while I was at work and could you believe that my HK stuff was being delivered.... but no one signed so I got to pick it up tomorrow . But on the bright side that means I can finish the mechanical part of the ship and get it in the water to test her out soon!

Edit#2 Have gotten a little bit done with the electronics, but I am having issues with my orange rx not working anymore soldered up the battery and the speed controller, everything worked fine till I started getting ready to mount it in the ship... go figure. I did some modeling work with the radio antennas making em out of metal. I work retail so my life has been work sleep work maybe a little BF3 sleep work :P. I ll get some more pics posted of what I have done soon.

I am going to have to order another orange r/x I just blew my second one... I don't know if its the speed controller or not but it is frustrating.

Just ordered new speed controller and 1s orange rx so everything should plug and play... so much for building this on the cheap and with parts I had... but when you get the I NEED IT NOW bug you gotta have it.

Does the speed control have reverse? I have used solder paste and a reheat gun on surface mounted components with some luck, my best solution is to talk someone else to do it.
Regards,
Gerald.

no it doesn't I am almost 100% sure rx because they don't bind they don't blink ... one lights up super dim. I ordered another speed controller just because I chopped off the micro plugs and I sorta regret doing that, and the hobbyking extension wires tend to brake after prolonged use.

I am going to wire a series of switches one for the lights (the part I dread doing the most since its a pain to solder) and one for the boat, with a charge plug.

Anyone have any suggestions for on off switches? one for about 10led's and one for rx and 3 aero ace motors?

I figure with my Fletcher I get 45min + (never actually used an entire battery) on a 130mah battery, so 1000 will be a looooooong while.... almost scale :P.

I started painting and modeling since I don't have much else to do till I get a new Rx which has been shipped, going to mold the ballast out of lead.

Just slapped on some base coats, The flash makes it seem a little lighter than it is. Finding more imperfections and fixing it. Going to start assembling the upper decks making holes for the lights... which trying to map out where they are going and where I am going too drill out the holes. here are some pics of my messy work desk and ship!

So I got one of my orange RX working!!! now i soldered up the motors and esc but when I plug in the battery the esc powers up my rx and the motors at the same time to like 80% power... I can control the rudders and give it slightly more power.

Anyone familiar with http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ro_Motors.html Esc? or in general am I just being an idiot I really need the help!! I have another esc on the way but I really wanted to take this ship out for christmas eve sailing.

That esc is notorious for behaving strangely! and the HK orange Rx also goes flunky at low voltage. If ennough space in the hull you might have more luck with a 4 cells Nimh for power instead of single Lipo, the AeroAce motors can stand 4.8V.

I got it all working, did some lighting work... got to take some pics. Adding head sinks to the motors as they get realllly hot. doing some minor work I ll post a full update wed, with a bunch of pics (next day off )

Here are the best from the batch... a lot of the pictures were redundant and I think people will get the point with these. So from the get go this project has given me headaches first with the molding then with the electrical.... which smoked like a cigar at me this afternoon... think its fine tho so I still am going to trudge through it. I also re designed the rudder to give me more throw. I also lost a part had to remold it... poorly but it works... been working on the lighting system which worked great when I tested it, but flickered after I coated the lights in silicone to protect and defuse the light... bunch of stuff that went wrong did. I also haven't gotten the parts from HK so I have been working with the original parts which have been abused!

Finally got the new parts in from hk... took for ever. One of the main issues I have though is that the esc puts out too much power for some of these pager motors and they overheat... then die. I have been testing it a lot and I get maybe 20min of run time before they just stop. Can anyone suggest a cheap alternative too 7mm pager motors? I might try to find 10mm ones or something I just don't want this thing skipping on the water:P. I am also thinking of making a belt drive system and using one big motor.

Pager motors are corless design and erquires a HF esc to last. A M-20/N-20 can be used with a regular esc:

http://www.homefly.com/products.asp?id=45
M-20/N-20 have the same shaft size as 6mm/7mm coreless and just weigth a bit more:

http://home.comcast.net/~gordon-johnson/n20.htm
You can also use a HV version of the M-20 for lower rpm and lower drain:

Thanks For the links, sorry for the no reply till now, got caught up on a mini project I did while I got frustrated with this one :P. Little update on the bismark Not much has moved on it Got my new hardware from HK going to do it all 1s so I can have a solid signal. Still working on the motor issue. I am thinking of doing a belt drive but I need to find micro pulleys or make em... I am thinking out of spru.

And now something for your eyes.... something that distracted me with the original gear for the bismark. My 1/700 scale Arizona.

Didn't paint it to top notch I was too exited to get it in the water, the guns move . I might re paint it.

For you nemo Ill get one up as soon as I can . my day off is tomorrow probably then. As far as the project it has been paused because I keep burning motors. I have an idea but have been really busy havent really gotten too much time to work on my projects .

ps I am terrible with time lol, pools dirty :O and sorry for the shakes holding my phone up while driving with my other hand and mouth. she was faster but I dropped her and broke the motor loose so i have to cut her open and fix that. I also rigged her up with some wires since last picture. I really need to get started with the Bismark but to be honest i look at it with a little frustration. I think I found a way to make pullly's using my rotating hole punch and old gift cards (small punches say 3 followed by two bigger punches as caps) but I still don't know. its also big and frankly the smaller the better in my opinion. I also bought a scharnhorst 1:762 scale which is tinnnnny so tempted to use most of the electronics in that thing.
