I'd get something with motor redundancy if it's to lift a big heavy camera. Either Y6, X8 or Octo. Why not get in touch with Tony at http://www.rc-drones.com and see what he recommends for you.

I'm feeling a bit under the weather at the moment, so haven't been able to write as many articles as I would have liked. I have just published a new one about multicopter lighting though and I'll carry on editing it to add more detail as I start feeling better again, as well as a step by step video for adding lighting.

I have the same motor question.
Am planning to build a quad now for camera platform (no acrobatics) on a X525 frame (600mm between motors) and later on advance to a self build HEX frame. Will these motors be good? I have bought 9" and 11" props for them to test out. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=6247 |

I know that the DT750 motors are cheap, but I'm not a big fan. Just about the best budget motors that you can get for multicopters are the Sunnysky x2212-980KV. It's a little bit more money for a lot more motor. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUNNYSKY-X...item3a75d8158a

The reason that I haven't updated the gimbal part of the mid-range copter article is because it's really hard to find a high quality gimbal that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
What complicates things with the F450 frame is that you don't just need a gimbal, but you need a landing gear as well. At the moment, it does look like the X468 might just be the best choice for what you need as it's specifically designed for the F450, so you won't have any mounting issues at least. http://drone-pilot.blogspot.fr/ |

You might need to extend your landing gear a bit though. If you can afford it, then you can't go wrong with the photohigher gimbal and it will be better if you upgrade your frame in the future. The problem is that to fit it you need to find an extended landing gear for your F450. There's plenty of them about though, so shouldn't be too difficult finding a suitable landing gear. |

I saw someone asking about prop sizes. I learned a lesson today about precisely this. I have a 550 quad I was experimenting with prop sizes on. It has a NAZA FC, and Avroto 2814 motors. I originally had some APS slow flyer 10x4.5 props on it and it did pretty well. I am building a heavy lift hexa that will soon ave a Sony nex5n on an AG550 gimbal hanging from it. Since I live at 600ft.(Tahoe), I figured I should do some prop tests on my quad to help me decide which ones I want to put on the Hexa. Heres how it went. I changed out the quads APC 10x4.5s with some Graupner 10x5" props. As it turns out the Graupners dont produce as much lift and needed higher RPMs to achieve flight. The higher RPMs turned out to be too high for the Avroto motors. When I would rotate the craft, or climb quickly, some of the motors would overspeed causing them to oscillate, causing the craft to wobble, then the NAZA compounded the wobble trying to compensate for it, which resulted in the crash in the first 30sec. of this video. (I got lucky and only broke a few props, and sliced up the E-ZUP tent canopy that it crashed into)
What did I learn? A prop of a certain size and pitch from one manufacturer likely doesnt produce the same lift of a prop of the same or similar size/pitch from a different manufacturer. Also, if you overspeed your motors there may be high speed oscillations of the motor as a result, causing a crash. I figure this may help anyone wondering about prop sizes. I am going a bit bigger with mine from now on flying generally at or above 6000". Hope this helps anyone pondering prop sizes! |
