The reason why GOP hates ACORN.
We've been getting an overload of bunk in recent weeks from a gaggle of Fox-brained Republican Congress critters. They've been flapping their gums to demonize and destroy a grassroots group that has offended them by--get ready to be outraged--organizing and helping to empower thousands of Americans who live in low-income and working-class neighborhoods all across the country.
ACORN is this grassroots group. For four decades, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now has been going door to door, neighborhood to neighborhood, to extend basic democratic tools to people who've been dissed and dismissed by the political system. What ACORN's effort amounts to is civic education. Few members of the local chapters have ever been active in community decision making. After all, that process is usually held in the tight grip of moneyed interests who reside and work in distant, much tonier zip codes, and regular folks rarely are welcome. Through ACORN, however, these powerless ones get an immersion in self-help democracy, learning how to operate in the public sphere to become both political and economic players. They form their own neighborhood organizations, elect officers, and choose a set of issues to push--from bank redlining to better garbage pickup, from rip-off utility bills to enforcement of antipollution regulations. They soon discover that working together, they have actual power to get things done through direct actions, group negotiations, and voter participation. http://www.alternet.org/story/145371 They are the group, most responsible for protecting those that the wingers want to be culled, and killled, by the "free market". They want to bring maximum pain to the dispossessed. This is to TEACH all the rest to do or die. And we, the Dems, are the ruthless authoritarians, RIGHT! |

Anything even remotely similar to the antics by ACORN commited on the GOP side would be squashed in milliseconds. Somehow this org gets away with murder and all the while is subsidized with our tax dollars.

Well, except for that small "Nevada" problem. Do you think your absolute statement could have been "absolutely wrong?" |

I won't bother to look for a confirmed case of ACORN attempting to improperly influence elections - I made no claim that they did so. I pointed out that the suspicion that ACORN might have done so is a reasonable one, and is reason enough to view them with trepidation.
My point is that not all Republicans, or even all Republican Representatives, dislike ACORN for the reasons you attribute to them. |

The other reason is now moot. The repubs have used their manchurian activist judge to overturn 100 year old precedent, to address once and for all the Dem problem. Now, the repubs, that suck the teat of big business, will never again suffer a campaign contribution deficit. Talk about conspiracies.
