Keecat Electric Conversion

Amazing I cant seem to find a thread on the Richmodel Keecat-65 discussing an electric conversion. I did find one on an EDF conversion but I was looking at using an outrunner, 3 blade prop.

Anybody know of a thread and or have any info on this topic ?

I have a motor and prop I want to use but dont think I'll have enough watts and was wondering if the AUW changed using an electric motor ILO of gas etc.

I have one of these that's still in the box. Looks like a beautiful plane. I will probably do an electric conversion to mine. Not sure yet though.

I have it's little brother the Ling Cat and have had bad luck with it. On the maiden flight it would pitch up severely. It took full down elevator trim to get it flyable enough to land. Found information on the Rich Models website the CG stated in the instructions is wrong. Corrected CG to their recommended location and flew it again. Still severe pitch up problem with full down elevator trim needed to fly it. Checked elevator incidence angle and found it to be about 3 degrees negative with respect to the wing. So I adjusted the elevator incidence angle to about 0 degrees and flew again. This time the plane flew pretty well. Got about 3 minutes flight on it so I decided to see how the plane would roll. Started the roll and the plane locked in the roll and spun into the ground. I had gambled that a park flyer receiver had the range to fly the plane but now I believe not. I think the receiver went into hold mode as soon as I started the roll and spun the plane into the ground.

So I have just ordered and received another Ling Cat . This time I am going put a full range receiver in it and build up my experience with this plane and become accomplished with it before I build my Kee Cat.

This "style" is popular, th eissue I see is this model has a typical weight profile of an "IC designed" airframe... 120oz-124oz...

It could a nice flyer... but the listed weight is to much for my taste... but please do post you progress, setup, etc... its all good stuff... and every plane has a story to tell.

converted a bobcat(45-50) to electric.
rimfire .51 using a 13x8(can go up to 13x10) apc
100a esc
6cells 4000-5000mah
and electric retracts.

should power yours fine.

just need to spin the prop fast(high kv) to keep the prop from getting to big.

bobcat 50 over TRAC (6 min 31 sec)

bobcat converted to electric (3 min 57 sec)

Thanks everyone. I think Im going to use this Power Up 60 motor

The Power Up 60 Sport is a 14 ounce, 500KV, 1400 watt outrunner brushless motor that is roughly equivalent in power to .60 size two stroke glow engines. It works well with 4, 5 and 6 cell Lipo

This motor mount

6s 5000 lipo

maybe a 12x8x3 prop. We'll see about that once I get it mounted and check for clearance etc.

Im hoping to get by with a HET 75 amp ESC. We'll see..

Couple of questions.

You came in hot for your landings. Did you have to or you think it would glide more than you let it ?

Did you add that canopy latch ?

Do you know what your AUW was

those were early flights.
canopy had a front tongue and rear thumb screw.

it will accually take off from grass and belly land if needed.

and a power 60 out runner will ned almos a 14-15" prop.
i have had a lot of power 60 types convered.

i just converted a twin widgeon that had OS FP 60s. those were replaced by tacon power 46 and spins the 11x7 props faster than the fp's did..

Not sure if you noticed but the prop I mentioned is a 3 blade prop. 12x8x3. The power up 60, 3 blade 12x8x3 6s lipo should give me 1200-1400 watts.

Looks like im going to have trouble with ground clearance using a 13x8 prop and probably even a 12x8. Not sure if a 11x8 or 11x9 will provide enough thrust.

I didnt use the motor mount mentioned above as the X mount mounted to the firewall just fine. I might have to manufacture a Z shaped bracket and bring the motor up an inch or 2.

I just started on my Keecat yesterday. This seems to be a very good kit. Still trying to make the decision between electric or glow power.

Where are you at on yours?

Im close. Probably maiden this weekend. Finishing up loose ends, retract wheel wells etc. AUW is 8lbs, ran it up on the watt meter yesterday but had some vibration so I backed it down. Hit 600 watts about half throttle. Need to run it up again.

Ok after searching around and finding that pusher props are available I have made the decision that I am going with glow power on this one. The engine will be a super tiger .90. I did this mainly for budget reasons. I already had the engine but do not have the power system for a plane this size.

I will be interested in knowing how your maiden goes.

I got a lot of work done on my keecat today. Since I don't want it to be a super speed machine I am going with fixed gear instead of the retracts. When I am finished I will post some pictures.

Just wandered if you have flown yours yet?
