As a rule of thumb outlet area should be 90% SweptFanArea (SFA = actual disc area covered by the blades)

The EDF unit should be placed as far backwards as possible, 4-8" distance is fine depending on the application.

outlet sizes

4-8inches isn't that far really...most fans ive seen are much further forward...i just ran upstairs and measured where mine is on my ejf f86....and it's roughly 18 inches from the tail to the fan housing....thats also where it's shown on the plan etc.....Haldor? you know an awful lot about electric jets.I've seen alot of your response's on here...youre smart....It's good you help everyone......thanx......Bruce

My hand-on experience is limited to the smaller fans, 480MF's and now HW609. On the designs based around these untis the EDF unit is usually located between the main wing TE and the elevator LE. The main reson being to achieve a correct CG with a heavy batt.pack up front. I think the aerodynamic reasons are secondary = unit location not very critical.
