More Working Boats - River IJ, Amsterdam

The River IJ in Amsterdam, in the Province of Holland, in the Netherlands is one of the most fascinating rivers in the world, to look at river traffic on.

When I work in Amsterdam, I have an office on the 8th Floor, near Centraal Station, that overlooks the River.

The river, about a mile wide, is always full of traffic. Several times I have looked out, or have been down on the waterfront and there has been over twelve (12) different river craft in line of sight, at any one time. The craft range from the most modern, to the most ancient, yet all coexist in harmony on the River IJ.

I present numerous different vessels here. If anyone is interested in a particular vessel, I have many more photos of each and details.

Lots of different craft here; Lots of inspiration for different ideas for builds, for this Winter.

I like some of the small fueling lubrication Tugs / Barges for a different build.

Lichtschip Mayflower

Tim,

The one boat in the whole collection, not taken in Amsterdam.

On the Ghent-Bruges-Ostend, 13, is an old Lichtschip Mayflower (light ship) docked at the Bargeweg (“Barge Square”), that serves as a Bar/Tavern. It is in Gent, West Flanders, Belgium.

The Mayflower was built in 1883 as 'light ship nr. 3' and later (around 1939-'40) renamed as 'Hollands Glorie'. The ship has had different destinations during his long life and survived the demolition hammer, eventually it came here.

The light housing, actually gets lifted up the mast to the spreader bar.

I took the picture last Thursday, on the overpass to the Bruges Train Station.

The vessel behind the Mayflower might be one of the bicycle tour barges, sleep and eat aboard and bike to the next overnight rendezvous. Very few hills en route. The skipper kindly let me aboard "Quo Vadis" a couple of years ago which was moored behind the lightship in Bruges. Restaurant at deck level, sleeping quarters below, immaculate ship, would love to do a section of the massive canal system in the Low Countries.
