K&A ME-262 anyone?

Look what came in the mail. A K&A ME-262! As always, the glasswork is beautiful!

I had always wanted a ME-262 after I saw RocketRobs: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=508236. My own adventure with the S&B prop version was mixed, though it was certainly pretty in the air http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=605398.

I eventually ordered it from Ken when he announce he had taken a full time job doing something else: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1259208.

The one thing I do not like about any of the ducted fan ME-262’s that are available (HET, GWS, FSK) is the unscale nacelle’s. After seeing Sam’s (a.k.a. Megowcoupe) post on using a microfan in the K&A F-86 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1158855) I started thinking about doing the sam with the K&A ME-262.

Ken was all over it, and even has a set of scale nacelle’s for the slope version which will easily fit a 50 m motor like a Wemotec microfan. The front and rear inlets at ~42mm and 35mm should be just about perfect as is.

I am hoping to get in at about 45 oz AUW. So I figure ~2 lbf of thrust should do fine for hand launch. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good 3s or 4s motor for the microfan?

Hi Greg, Sam came up with an idea to using two microfans in the warbirdkits Cutlass, instead of the single 66mm or 70mm. He sent me two microfans with Astro 010 8t mtrs. Good for a single 2200 4s pack. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1197274 Over 400W combined, IIRC.

They are very smooth. You may PM him, as he bought them RTR from someone. Uses CC PH 25's.

Hiya Greg! I'll be watching that thread closely... I've always been a fan of the "Schwalbe"!

Zooo. If the inlets are 1.57" ['real' Juno inlets were 18" diameter] then that model is 1 foot = 1 inch (1:12th +-) scale? ...42" wingspan.
Anticipated ready to fly weight?
Am surprised by the astro 10s, I had (wrongly? ) assumed those as ineffectual motors.

I love the ME-262. There's one sitting 15 minutes from where I live. The paint is a pastel blue and dark green-grey . The hangar light is sodium, can't get a good color rendition.

Wow,

I am really pleased with the response. I guess this is a favorite. This was meant to be a winter project. First I need to finish repairs on two other planes. Then I will start it.

Fuzz, thanks for the suggestion of the Astro's. I have used their motors before with good success.

Paco, in addition to Kistler, I now have two more business contacts near Zurich, ABB turbo and Duap. So I should have even more opportunities to drop by.

Hi Herb I am vacillating between making Heinz Bar's plane or the Stormbirds "Tango Tango", here photographed by you: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attac...mentid=3312006.

Hi Greg,

"Red 13" is a nice scheme ... I decided to do "Yellow 7" on mine instead.

Did you get yours in the air ?

Hey Greg,

I followed with interest your S&B 262 project up to the maiden. I gather it no longer flys. Im just starting to fly mine but have not raised enough courage to hand launch it yet.

Cheers

Hello Herb,

Very nice Airworld Schwalbe! A friend of mine in Austria has one in the process off a very slow build..... I will review your thread!

Our power field has gotten kind of crowded due to closures of other local fields. So I have spent more time sloping. I joined a local club with guys the fly F3F. I am not into racing. But the lift at the site is amazing and I go there on off-race days. I have become obsessed with Jart fever. Looks like a jet. Flies like a ducted fan. Stays in the air for hours if you like...

So the ME-262 kind of got sidelined. I was kind of thinking of turning it into a PSS....but I will probably finish it as a ducted fan over the winter when the lift dies.

Hello Sydneyflyer. The bungee is a great idea. Even with the incredibly light wing loading the S&B ME-262 just proved too hard to reliably handlaunch. Maybe 1 in 4 launches turned out OK. It was just really hard to keep it from nosing up and stalling as you can see from the first video. I got tired of it and parted it out. If you stick to the bungee you will be fine.

Greg

Hey- does anybody have a set of the scale nacelles for the 262 that they don't want? After a long hiatus, I finally flew my F-86 again and was reminded of how well the setup of a the Astro 015 in a microfan works- hence I think I want to do the Schwalbe this way too. Now I've got a Medusa in a 505 set up- but I think it's time to go to microfans instead. Anybody got some extra nacelles lying around?

Thanks,

Sam
