D130 Scratch Build Thread

I haven't done a build thread in a while. This model should be the best yet. Im getting excited as it shouldn't be long and I will be laying up parts. I am using Last-A-Foam for my molds. I only need to pull a couple parts from them. One for a prototype model and another set of plugs to take to the factory and start up production tooling. Here are some pics so far.

So you are cutting the molds out of last a foam and then just painting to seal them up?

I've got the same calculator as Joe Manor!

Nice one Joe - you're like the Howard Hughes of the model aircraft world, except without the paranoia, billions of dollars and loads of movie star girlfriends. But Howard Hughes never had the D130!!! Whoo hooooo!

Should be by the end of the year. I expect to have a flying prototype in about 6 weeks. Then Im off to China for a few weeks to help them get going on these. I think I will be going around the 1st of October. Production should begin before November 1st and we should see some models in December. Thats what Im shooting for anyway.

No, the painted mold is ready to lay up a part. It was really a test to see what kind of release I would get. I will be cutting a new elevator mold and spend a little more time prepping it. I will be using Varnish to seal them up. Then wax and PVA for release. The parts will need a little cleaning up once pulled from the molds.

Everybody can get a light version. Just replace the steel joiners with aluminum or carbon ones.
Actually, the steel joiners weigh 9lbs each. I think we can make suitable carbon joiners that weigh 3lbs each. Thats 12lbs lighter overall. Now it's a floater.

Yeah, that's a D80. Hard to tell from the pics yet but this is a big model.
