There are no 'Superfans'

Size for size, including the expensive Schubeler fans with an integrated, purpose designed motor, their efficiency is all much the same. Put the same number of watts in and you will get the same thrust out. Near enough.

Small fans, say 70mm, are not as efficient as 90mm ones, which in turn are not as efficient 120mm ones, etc.

And inrunner motors are more efficient than outrunners, the quality (tightness of windings, strength of magnets, etc). being the same.

The most important thing is matching of the motor to the fan. And motors should stay as cool as possible. Heat, even dissipated with a heatsink, is just wasted power. And current, not voltage, makes the motor hot. So go for a low Kv motor and use a high voltage, The current (thus heating) will be less.

Does this contradict inrunner Vs outrunner in propeller applications ? Please explain why.

True, LJ should have made the title "cheapest that will do the job" as he obviously dislikes anything that costs a few $$, referring to them as "POS"

Baldy, don't know if it contradicts anything, is it proven outrunners are better than inrunners with props? Seems the best pylon racers and speed machines run inrunners too

Depends on what you want it for. Inrunners are inherently more efficient than outrunners but don't have so much torque at low revs so you might have to use a gearbox if you want to drive a big prop. This will lower the efficiency. Pylon racers tend to use small props so don't need the gearbox. A powered glider with a big prop will need one if you use an inrunner, but a high-quality setup (I use Kontronik for such planes) might still be better than the 'average' cheap outrunner.

Costs:
Sometimes higher costs have to be accepted. You cut corners the performance is lessened. EDFs are hard enough already.

Personally I have grave doubts about the safety of some of these very low cost Chinese fans. Particularly if you run them way above any specification they might have. Which we all tend to do. And it's not just safety. If they come apart they will destroy your plane too. And I would rather spend 200 dollars on something that works rather than 100 dollars on something that doesn't.

And toy planes aren't part of your pension scheme anyway.

(BTW: You can't quote me at the moment because I have been what the mods apparently think is excessively 'direct' a couple of times )

I get the same comments from time to time.

Take it as a compliment.
