It's a 55-in Skywing YAK-54!

Rumors have been circling around about Skywing's next plane. It has turned out to be a full-fuse 55-in Yak-54! I've got some photos to show you.

From photos we can see it's a prototype that is rather slim and has a relatively long fuselage. It's designed to use 2 3S-2200mAh packs in serial so that existing 48-in Skywing owners don't have to re-invest in batteries.

The landing gear seems to be constructed with wire and EPP sheets.

Video Update:

Cheers,

Wattaplane Color Schemes for the Yak

Hi guys,

I've got the Wattaplane color schemes designed. If we can produce the Yak with only color scheme, what would be your choice from the green, the purple and the red? (Is there a way to add a poll to this post?)

Thanks.

Nice job feda!

I've been waiting for a full-fuse 55" EPP.

Would love to see a big Edge in that size.

P.S. Red/White/Blue or Blue/Yellow/White. Whatdaya' think???

I just bought a Yellow Slick, now I have to save up for the YAK!

That thing is awesome! I also like the idea of a white one that you could custom paint yourself. I have a friend that is awesome with a airbrush.

I like the idea of the 6s setup... but it could probably be flown on 4s also, just might need to setup pull-pull on the rudder to get it to balance. Wonder if it's too late for that kind of option.

i like the option to paint. be nice to have something different from everybody elses. also kinda exciting to see what the addicts come up with in the creativity department.
only thing would be not an advertisment for skywing. people not in the know, wouldnt know what brand of plane it is just by looking at it.

wonder if sfgs would be an option with the plane

Got some more info on setups and I'm probably wrong about worrying about 6s vs. 4s. From how it was explained to me, probably better off on 2 3s packs, should get longer flights vs. the 4s, and the added boost of more voltage.

I had similar concerns when I saw " 6s power", but had it explained to me that the design is for 2 3s 2200 batts in series, and that to get similar flight times from 4s you'd probably need 4000mah 4s, so wouldn't save any weight and may still have shorter flight times. I don't have any specific experience with this type of setup, so I decided to wait until the plane was in my hands to decide how I would go. Will probably get a better feel for it once we see some video, so like I said, reserving my thoughts on the power system.

I ran 2- 3s 2200s in series on a 3dhs 58" Edge. Was not a great setup in my opinion! Way over powered, and to ballistic. 4s was perfect for the 50"s size birds, plenty of power. Again, just my opinion! I am intrigued to see how the 55" would perform.

I really wonder how the sandwich wings will hold up for 6s setup. My 6s balsa planes are ranging from 5.2 to 6 lb in AUW (300g 500kv motor, 80-100a ESC, xoar 15x8, 6s 3300). Every time I do a hard wall or blender, I am afraid the wings or motor box would snap. I guess the airframe will receive much less stess if the AUW is below 4.5 lb.
