Cautery Advice

I am contemplating (again) buying a cautery pen to "burn" off excess covering material (usually RAMicrolite) on small models.

If you've used one successfully - or not, I'd like to hear your stories, experiences, failures and successes!

Thanks, David. However, foam and soldering irons have a blood hatred!!

(Most of my long-lived foam planes have unique, creative soldering iron carvings in them. Don't ask me how they got there!!)

Just a thought, and I know you're in the U.S., but can you get anything like this over there? It would allow you to control the power to the iron, or the cautery pen, to get fine control of the heat.

Is this a 'cautery pen', or similar?

EDIT: Sorry Derk, missed your post, I know what a cautery pen looks like now. Could you just make one with some fine wire and a nine volt battery? Or just take the blades out of a disposable razor and stick one to a swizzle stick?

Yes, we do, but the one I'm looking at runs on batteries. And I have an adjustable dc voltage regulator.

I have successfully attached RAMicrolite to Depron faced with 1/16" balsa, but ONLY at structure/covering interfaces like spars, formers, ribs, longitudinals, etc.

Now. I merely want to trim away excess where a blade is impractical.
