FPV Slow Stick
A few days away from getting the last bit of the puzzle to FPV my slow stick, as an FPV trainer (My Easy Glider is my primary, but the SS can take a knock a lot better during my training...)... so today I was itching to check it with weight... Added some dead weight to see how it flys. We're having some storms, but in between some torential rain, I tried a quick flight. Wind was dead at take off, but quickly got a bit gusty (within 30 seconds of take off! )
Plane survived, but it was very scarey!
Underwear change possible required...
galaxiex, or other Slow Stick masters... - how does your SS handle wind, and are there ways to make it happier? I only added a few extra grams. In real life, I'll be adding a heavy GWS 360* serveo, camera and 500mw 900Mhz video Tx.... I might have to upgrade my motor. I'm using an Integy 200W Outrunner+ESC System.
Input: 15A max
BEC output: 6V 3A
RPM: 0 to 30,000
Current: Electronically controlled
3S 2200mah Lipo.
Note: This isn't FPV.... It's conventional flying.

Well.... My SS FPV plane handles quite a bit of wind. I have flown in 22 mph wind with gusts over that.
It wasn't really fun but the plane could handle it.
My FPV SS is outfitted with gyros on all 3 axis.
One gyro for pitch, and one gyro tilted to handle both yaw and roll.
Heavily reinforced wing. (to handle the added weight)
Extra long fuse/stick. 1200mm overall length (makes the plane even more stable)
Raised wing mount. (stability again, all the weight "hangs" below the wing)
AUW 42 oz.
Sooooo, it is quite far from a stock SS configuration.
I'm sure you have seen this vid before....
Sorry I don't have anything new recorded...
This is in 22 mph winds.....

And just for fun....
A very old vid...my first SS with camera.
Mostly stock, (wing, tail, fuse) no gyro's, but with a mild brushless motor....
oops, forgot.... custom vertical fin and rudder....

In the windy one, you can see the vertical stabiliser bending in the wind, before you take off!! hehe.. That was excellent.
Gyros... mm... Which do you use? I've seen some really small light ones at HobbyKing... Might invest in one of those... That would make life a load easier... Not sure how the one gyro handles two axis though?

Those are the Blue Arrow nano gyro. HK sells them.
I like them because they are so small and light, and they work very well.
The bad part is.... out of a dozen or so that I have bought from HK, 3 have been NFG right out of the package.
I still buy them, knowing I could get a bad one.....
They are not the cheapest, but they are the smallest and lightest I have seen.
I also have about 6 of the HK Turnigy TG380 gyro. They are also small and light and work well.
But of the 6 I have....2 are NFG.
Do some reading.

Thanks galaxiex. I'll gyro may SS up a bit... Start with just one... Probably on yaw?
That 'thing' you use to lift the wing up a bit - is it a custom made thing, or are they buy-able? That seems like a pretty good fix for stability. My x-gear has also seen better days...

Cralis, I fly my slow stick FPV. Had decent success with it too, only I wasn't flying in gusty wind When I eventually get around to meeting up with you guys you can see my slow stick. It's probably not the best by any means but may help with ideas? I'm thinking about the gyro deal myself!
Edit: Forgot to mention that the mounting tabs and wing raisers that Galaxiex uses can be purchased here: www.radicalrc.com/shop/?cat=249
Dave has stacks of great slow stick upgrades that come in handy, I have got a couple of small things off him before

Thanks draron! Will check the site. Are you flying the SS FPV at the moment? I will be getting my video Tx, so will maybe try it FPV this weekend. (So, might need to replacement parts pretty soon. )

No probs! Yeah the SS is my only fpv plane at the moment, have my head tracker going now, and I'm just waiting on my simple OSD I don't have the wing raisers but still find it quite steady to fly (not that I fly in a lot of wind)

Ok, where and when do you fly! I'll come and do some formation flying (as my maiden) with you. Where abouts in Brisbane? I'm 'North Side'..
