Rockwell XFV-12a

I came across the Rockwell XFV-12a and was inspired to build a jetset44 style model.

Wingspan: 26.5 inches
Length: 36 inches
Wing area: 82.6 square inches
Canard area: 32.1 square inches

Preview of plans is attached below. (This is output from Sketchup.)

Construction is pretty straightforward:

* The fuselage is a box construction, with a few formers, and with doublers along the seams for later rounding.

* The forward fuse tapers to the centerline and turns into a former that runs to the rear and holds the stick mount for the pusher motor.

* The plans show a flat wing but following mopar_man, I laid the 5mm spar on top of the 6mm wing and bent a 3mm skin over top in a faux airfoil.

* There's one servo for the canard -- probably set up as an elevator. There are separate servos for the wing's control surfaces -- probably will be set up as ailerons. All control surfaces are actuated with torque rods.

* The nose cone and canopy are carved from pink foam.

* A short section of 1mm carbon rod is inserted in the tip of the nose cone and in the tips of the winglets.

* The bottom is reinforced with Silkspan from brodak.com . (I'm trying this instead of brown masking paper in the hopes it will be easier to cover in paint later.)

* The bottom half of the winglets are attached with magnets in the hopes that they'll be attached during flight but pop off on landing.

The model is (almost) ready for a first flight, largely pending good weather.

As this is my first canard model, do let me know if you have any advice for the first flight and/or if you have any questions about the build.

Jeffsch,

Nice build. For your maiden, I would definitely have dual rates set up. Also, you might want to consider skids/land gear to protect the canard. It may take away from the looks, but it'll help ward off damage. Consider this your prototype/test mule. lol Search RC for thr "Star Cobra". Only other plane I know that uses the canard for it's elevator. Good Luck. Very nice Plane.

It is an odd one isn't it. Thanks for the link.

I've been waiting for better weather before its first flight. (And I'm still mulling over the suggestion by ksqm re: skids or other to protect the canard.)

FYI The forward fuselage and cockpit was a A-4 skyhawk and the nose gear retracted forward. Lots of off the shelf parts was used to control costs. Only time it was in the air was suspended from a gantry for tests. Hope it flies good.
Will be watching how this project goes.

Thanks for asking! Took it to our club meeting and got lots of good advice -- some the same as here.

It's waiting for its first flights now. The weather would be a convenient excuse, but we've been having unseasonably good weather.

Actually that is good news. Some fellows start an unusual scratch built and re-kit it on the first flight and you never hear another word. I'm glad that's not the case here.

A little reinforcement of the business end of the jet. The battery hatch I built is too far forward to balance -- the area and location of the canard more than offset the rear-mount motor. The picture shows where a 1750 mah battery needs to go,
