Rare DJI CEO Frank Wang by WSJ
In yesterday's Wall Street Journal video section, WSJ interviewed DJI CEO Frank Wang, creator of the Phantom drone (speaking from the company's Shenzhen, China headquarters) about DJI's start and the future of unmanned aircraft. Below is a synopsis of the interview. For online subscribers to WSJ's excellent online publication (I give strong recommendations to the publication), here's the link:
FW - Four years ago DJI made flight control systems with focus on the operating systems. Since they were complicated, hard to operate and difficult to use, DJI refocused its efforts on a system that was small, reliable and cheap enough to grow the market. Thus, DJI shifted from focusing FCs to drones. Like all DJI products, the Phantom is a collection on camera technology, stabilizing and FC technologies.
WSJ - What about poor customer service and flyaways?
FW - Traditionally, RC hobbyists blamed themselves for reliability problems. But since DJI products are so easy to use, many more people are purchasing them that inevitably result in usage problems... or the drone technology is in a bottleneck stage, leading to an unsatisfactory situation. Regardless, DJI is working hard to create new products and use new services to keep customers satisfied.
WSJ - Many are unaware DJI in a Chinese company. Why is that and is it intentional?
FW - We don't hide anything but DJI recruits people from around the world, including marketing, sales and video editors. DJI's objective is to hire the best people.
WSJ - What's DJI's future?
FW - Continue to make products very easy to use, realizing the human dream to fly and to make products that perform well to ensure customers enjoy their purchases. Also, DJI will produce products for applications including industrial, agricultural and other commercial uses. The coming years will be very exciting for unmanned aircraft.
