how are you guys handling the spark delay on start up? is it just a set delay until the engine is up to a certain speed? or is it something more elaborate like with the synchrospark where the dwell time of the magnet under the hall sensor is measured?

It is a set delay but, the amount can be changed in the code. I believe the most used amount works out to 5 degrees advanced for starting.

When the timing uses the look-up table (delay/timing) is once again set in the code, so you could say that the engine is not concidered running until the rpm hits something like say 400 rpm. The code also can be set to distinguish between you slowly turning the motor (No Spark) and you trying to start it, say 200 rpm.

This one is a little more tougher to answer because there is no set hall sensor being used. IMHO I think we all agree to use a rising edge. Because there is no set Hall Sensor used the trigger point (Dwell Point) is different for every magnet and every Hall Sensor used. Jake has done a pretty good job with the code and if you set the magnet and sensor properly while watching the sense LED then only the trigger point is important (Digital), same as a RCexel ignition. With the SynchroSpark you described it is more like an inductive pickup rather than hall sensor (digital switch).

P.S. Nice to see your still around Zagnut.

that's precisely what has always bugged me about the synchro spark: it supposedly measures dwell time between rising and falling edges to determine start up retard yet it gets installed with any combination of magnet size and hub diameter and still seems to work just fine. just guessing they picked a nice middle ground that works OK no matter how it's set up.

I apologize to everyone that I haven't been more active on this thread but, life has been very busy for me lately. Good news is that I have finally been able to get back to the ignition and start to do some testing. I'll update when I get a chance.

That is what most manufacturers do and this way they play it safe. I've seen some engines double their power just by adjusting the ignition timing. Have to remember not to get greedy or you could end up melting a hole in the piston and I've been down that road. In the case that we use here (airplane power) just changing a prop size could put an engine in trouble or make it a dog for no reason other than timing. That's what makes this ignition so great, you have full control of the timing.

Lets say you put a bigger prop on and you take the plane for a test flight. During the test the engine doesn't seem to be putting out enough power you could through a bit-switch throw a switch on your transmitter and instantly load in a different timing curve while still in the air to see if the power increases or maybe gets worse.

Hi Rob,
Can you share with us?

Explication please.

The program and "The Aplication" have a "public" licence?
