How much are RC sail boats worth??

We have one a guy keeps trying to buy. But he doesn't
want to give much for it. Or it doesn't seem like much.

He has called twice in the last year or so to see if we
are ready to sell it. Brad won't put a price on it and
tries to be polite, but he is getting a little,, well you
know...

The boat is 62" one of a kind done in carbon fiber with
two sets of sails, both are professionally make. it has
all new deck hardware and running rigging. The deck
has been refinished and new rub rails are being installed.

Brad figures with the refit, he has about 1000 hours in
the boat.

The guy has offered $500 and says that is about all it is
worth.

Edit:

Here is a pic in the shop. He is adding handrails to the
top of the cabin, he meant to do that twenty years ago
and never got around to it. Also one of the new padeyes
he made to replace the ugly screw eyes he used in the
original construction.

He can solder pretty good!

How long is a piece of string

or

It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

If you think the boat is worth more than what is being offered don't accept, only accept what you are happy with or close to, once again only if you are happy with the offer.

This applies to all things being sold.

15 years in sales

Hope this helps

8387mike's answer may not be satisfying, but it is true.

Looks like a nice boat and it certainly is an impressive size, but it appears to be a 'one off', not fitting into any particular racing class so it might have limited market- that isn't to say that it isn't worth more than $500. but it is only worth the highest bid of an interested buyer. Best thing to do is make a decision about what you think it is worth and negotiate with a buyer around that process until you are both happy. If you are looking at the number of hours spent on the boat as a basis for its price, don't- the per hour rate you will likely get back on a sale will be depressing. (all of us in the hobby who have tried this get depressed)

I agree with all the posts above, especially the 'never look at time spent'. The other way to estimate a value is look at it from the buyers point of view. What else can he buy for $500 and how does it compare to your boat.
A Fairwind will set you back about $350. A completed (RTR) Soling 50 from GRP goes for $1,700, and there isn't any varnished wood on that boat. Even an EC-12 short kit from Chesapeake is $700.
I would guess that $500 is a bit low, even for a one off, in the shape pictured. Tell your customer that for $500 the best you could do would be to sell him one of your unfinished project boats and have him spend the 1000 hours getting it up to speed.

My opinion is that a $500 offer was generous.

The boat is not really for sale at all. It is listed on our
homeowners insurance for a lot more than $500.

When something happens to Brad it will go to the
local library with the funds to build a display case for
it.

Side note, the boat has great sentimental value. I know,
no $$,, but,, Brad built a full size Ensenada 25. It was
destroyed in a tornado in Dec. 1988. After two years of
work, it was only in the water three days. It was only
under sail twice.

Another note.. The guy trying to buy it is a jerk, and I
mean a JERK!

Drives a Vette, that tells most of it, brags about his wife
being an ex-XXX star, true. Is loud, rude and vulgar.
He is the person you do not want sitting behind you
at the ball game... He is also an extreme racist.
Brad would burn the boat before selling it to him for
a million dollars.

Thanks for your comments, it is pretty much as we
thought.

Ha Ha Ha -

just don't answer the door anymore, use caller ID, and block any emails. He'll get the hint. Telling him to his face he is a "jerk" will only stroke his ego.

As long as you have not use very specific words....

"This boat is not for sale!" ...

you are negotiating. This guy will continue to come back until you place some value on the boat even if joking and he will get his lawyer to hold you to it.

"This boat is not for sale. Don't ask again in any way."

Then you have grounds for a harassment suit if he doesn't stop. Get you little recorder out.

And like it was said, don't stroke his ego by telling him he's a jerk. Because he wants to be the best jerk out there and you're only go to confirm that.

He has been told it is not for sale. He thinks, he, can buy
any thing he wants. This is the guy that parks right in
front of the door at Wal Mart and sits there in the car with
the radio going full blast while his wife shops for an hour.
He is a car salesman BTW!

I could go on and on about this guy, but that's not what
this forum is about..

Sometimes you want to tell these people to shoot a squirrel break out the fire wood and set up camp !! Agitating people is what feeds these creatures. It takes a lot more skill to step into a bond with out lifting the mud than it dose to muck it up for every one else. Perhaps they crave validation they hadn't as pubescent children. If you ever see me blocking the road let me know please.
Last guy I purchased a car from was excellent first time this has happen in a dealership.
Here you go
Tell the guy you sold it for 50. bucks to his wife's girl friend, she works at Wally World and that's why XXX shops so much.
Better yet
Tell Mr. Suave you gave it to some guy for fifty Bucks and its on lay away end of story !!!
Nice little boat

You're not going to get rich building beautiful model boats unfortunately. Despite the time put into it its still a toy and $500 for it seems pretty good if you need the cash.
