Alpha 4 Charger for sale

I've got a Litco Alpha 4 charger that will handle 4-8 charging units at a
time. It will charge your transmitter and a bunch of planes together
simultaneously. These are arguably the best chargers for transmitter and RX
maintenance made. There is always a waiting list to get one.

I'll take $200 + shipping for mine. gv

The instructions state you can "Y" off each jack as long as you don't use up
to the maximum current. Gv

Interesting... how would it do proper maintenance without a seperate
channel?
How would detect the difference from one pack to the other?

It wouldn't.

It's not really a good idea to charge NiCd/NiMH packs in series or
parallel. Series isn't so bad, if the packs are the same and are at
similar levels of charge, or if the charge rate is low, but parallel
can be pretty bad, possibly overcharging one pack and not fully
charging the other. On the bright side, the Alpha 4 doesn't charge
particularly fast (I think the maximum charge rate for all ports
combined is one amp) so it probably works reasonably well, especially
in series.

There's an Alpha 4 on ebay right now, at $75 with 6.5 hours to go. It
was advertised on rec.models.rc.air a few days ago. They used to be
the hottest things going, but the market has really dropped out on
them in the last few years.

In fact, I don't think Litco is making these anymore, and I don't
think the waiting list has opened up in two years now -- or at least I
haven't heard of it, and the web site hasn't been updated.

Personally, when I need lots of ports, I use this charger --

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXL331&P=7

it has charge rates somewhat similar to the Alpha 4, but it's a dumb
charger instead of a smart charger/cycler. It's also only $30, and
easy to get. My only gripe is that it won't tell you what the voltage
of a port is -- so you've got to use a multimeter to make sure your
packs are connected properly and giving the expected voltages.

(Cycling, and fast charging, especially for larger packs, I've got two
Tritons for that.)

Doug;
NiCads & NiMH batteries ARE charged in series. I don't imagine you
are charging your TX or RX pack cells individually. So if you cascade
SAME current rating batteries in series be it 4 or 8 the charger handles
it. NiCads and NiCd batteries are not charged in parallel.

RE: ***SPAMTAGPTD: Alpha 4 Charger for sale

This function is basically for keeping the same size pack 'trickle charged.'
What you would do is peak charge each pack, and then us one port for 2
batteries of the same size to maintain readiness. I've never done it, it
was just in the manual so I thought I'd point that out. Honestly, I just
fast charge the TX on the way to the field and charge the flight pack while
I'm packing the truck and then finish it off while I'm setting up at the
field.

Yes, I know this.

But there's a number of assumptions made here -- similar packs, in
similar condition, and at similar states of charge. If all of these
things aren't somewhat close for both packs, you run the risk of not
fully charging one of your packs (as one peaks before the other, and
the charger shuts off) or overcharging a pack (because it's peak
wasn't detected, and so the charger continues until the other peaks.)
Or overcharging both packs, as neither peak is large enough for the
charger to detect and so it never shuts off, or doesn't shut off until
it hits some safety timer.

Yes, some chargers are better than others and will probably shut off
as soon as the first pack peaks, but even then, the other pack will
not be fully charged, unless by dumb luck they happened to peak at the
same time.

It's a practice best avoided, unless you're sure that all those things
match up somewhat closely. (They don't have to match exactly, but
they should be close.) Or you're sure that your charger is sensitive
enough to reliably stop when the first pack peaks, and are then
willing to charge (`top off') each pack separately to make sure each
is fully charged.

In the case of your TX or RX packs, those cells generally came from
the same batch, are generally charged and discharged at the same time
and at the same rate, are the same age, etc. Their conditions are
generally pretty similar. Most people can't say the same thing about
two random RX packs found in their garage.

For a trickle charge, where you don't care about detecting peaks, it's
just fine. But I already covered that.

| NiCads and NiCd batteries are not charged in parallel.

They can be, and if the cells are similar, in similar condition and
start at similar states of charge it will generally get your cells
somewhat close to 100% charged. But it's even more sensitive to
differences between the two cells than series charging, making it a
worse idea. And for trickle charging it probably won't work at all.
