Launch plans

I've previously described the HAER marine documentation, with a number of plans and photos which are accessible from the Library of Congress:
http://matthewsmodelmarine.wordpress...eering-record/

Neither HAER nor the LoC do a very good job of letting us know when new stuff gets listed, nor is it easy to find things. But I went digging again recently and found these neat early 1900's launch drawings:
http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=hhsheet&action=browse&fileName=mi/mi0700/mi0721/sheet/browse.db&recNum=0&itemLink=D?hh:4:./temp/~ammem_m6UY::&title2=Metal+Fantail+Launch,+Michiga n+Maritime+Museum,+South+Haven,+Van+Buren+County,+ MI&displayType=1&maxCols=2
This is a boat at the Michigan Maritime Museum, also see the text.

And another one, this from 1905, at the same museum:

Any idea what size these would come out if taken to kinkos and ran at full size? I really like the lines on the 1905 Launch. Add yet another to the "To build" list.

whatever size you like. it's called "scaling". and with the table of offsets, you could recreate the lines by hand or computer at any scale too.

1 inch to the foot is what the one plan says. So whatever the boat is long in feet = inches. Or a 1/12 scale boat. The other is 1 1/2 inch to the foot so it would be 1/8 scale.

Just opened the plan. The real boat is 21' and 7/8's of an inch long. So roughly 21.073 inches long.

Yeah, I noticed the 1"=1' and 1-1/2"=1' on the drawings. Was just wondering if you knew what size they would come out if printed at 100%. Thanks Pat and Todd. Gotta overlook me at times, Im new to the scaling up and down thing.

No prob! And now what would also be nice is some photos. There are several listed with the plans, but "not digitized yet". Can't imagine that's a big task, but with their budget, that status seems to remain forever. Guess we just need someone on the left side of the state to get in there and snap a few...

Nice site! Lots of plans for the scratch builder. Myself, that's likely not going to happen in my lifetime... LOL!

If you're lucky enough to have a good blueprint shop in your town, go to them for your reducing and enlarging.

And I don't mean Kinko's. Visit a place that does the printing for engineers and architects. They have the staff and equipment to do it right.

At the place that I use, all I need is a drawing and the percentage I want it to be shrunk or blown up to.

That metal launch looks just right for my Maxwell Hemmens steam plant. I can't get the larger version of the drawings to print out though. Any advice?

If I recall from the last time I looked at the files, the large and larger files are the same size (x pixels wide by y pixels high), but the tif file compression is turned off in the larger one... no resolution benefit in a B&W line drawing.

Once you have the file, various viewing programs will have different ways of scaling the image for printing to a given size...
