Help!
Smoked my motor?

Hi everyone,
I took my huck out to the flying field today and went to fly with the setup I have flown with twice before which is:

Hyperion Y22s 5000kv
60 amp controller
alfa 60/25 fan
enerland 1200 20c's

I was unsure of whether the fan would draw too much current for the motor and asked but got no reply on the forums. (I think it was pulling around 25 amps WOT at 200 watts or around that) I couldnt find any deffinate limit for the motor but had a look at other setups and thought that this should be ok.

The huck flew fine twice last week but this week when I went to test the throttle the rotor blades just jump quiver and dont start. I put the wattmeter on and find that in this state the current draw jumps around sometimes up to around 20 amps. To me this sounds like I have burnt the windings or something in the motor. I had no hint of a problem after landing last time apart from a feint hot smell.

any ideas would be a help, the battery and esc are fine I tested them in another setup.

Cheers
Matt

Hi,
Try measuring the resistance of the motor windings with an ohm meter. All three should be nearly the same. Any open or different from the others will mean the motor windings most likely fryed.

I have had motors act like that when one phase became disconnected.

Might be a bad solder connection.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll take it to work and put a meter on it and see what I get,

I have smoked 2 Y22 5000kv short motors. One was in a Wattage 68mm fan and the other was in an Alpha 55mm carbon fan. They can only handle small amp load (18 amps) and that is probably too much. They get real hot and I was flying at mostly WOT. Same symptoms as your (Quivering). The long version has held up in a wattage fan so far, but I have little faith in these motors. United Hobbies have lots of high KV 300 type replacements that are cheap. GWS high KV long brushless motor is cheap and works well also.

Just a newbie question, what is "smoked" inside the motor ? Are the magnets "de-magnetized" because of heat buildup ?

It will be the windings wire, the lacquer covering the wire will melt off and the wire may break like a fuse wire

Strykaas,
It can also be both. Demagged magnets will cause a higher amp draw for the same load possibly leading to smoked windings. If you rewind it you have to check the amp draw.

I tried to rewind these way too much work. I dont mind doing outrunners. And I literally smoked one of these motors (Saw puff of smoke during flight).
If you demag a motor it just stats to lose power but still runs because you never 100% demag it.

Could anyone suggest a drop in replacement for the y22s motor with the 60/25 fan?
Thanks

A decent 3s alternative is the LSJS, flies all day wide open on the 3 blade rotor(I have this setup) or 5 blade rotor(which I want), 5100kv. Another would be the Himax 2025-5300kv long can 20mm motor, it will work in the 3 blade fan, the 5 blade would be a no no. The limits of all electric motors is the heat that is produced by the amp draw it is subjected too and the cooling media that it has availability too such as the air that will flow arround it and the mass of motor(lighter weight will not absorb the waste heat produced compared to a heavier motor). Using the fairing that Alfa sends with its fans will generaly cut out most of the airflow arround the motor if not all so you might just do without it in the future, the thrust losses are meanial compared to the cost of a new motor and the trouble to replace it.

Good luck.

Yup, Like Eric says the LSJS would be my 1st choice followed by the Himax but you may have trouble getting one of these in the UK? in which case you could shop around for a 5000-5300kv 20mm long can motor (motor weight is around 66-70grams) This should gives you some options in motor brands that are available in your area
(Hackers and such ???)
