Tech One Sbach 342 1100 EPP from NP
Anyone (else) flying this (relatively) new ship?
Tech One Sbach 342 1100 EPP ARF
Got this for Xmas & I've flown it twice. Nice features are the removable wings & the 3D arms included with this ARF that came with a motor, ESC, servos & linkages. Assembly was fairly straightforward; however, the first flight ended with the rudder getting completely torn off when doing a slow & gentle harrier landing......
Had to use CA hinges & foam-safe contact cement to graft it back on. Not at all what I would've expected for this type of plane... Servos are smooth & quiet but the control rods are a thin gauge wire & are kinda flimsy for the extreme throws being asked of them, especially for the rudder......
Nice flying plane, though. Does great slow knife edge flight, harriers & hovers. Motor & ESC work well with a 12x6E prop & some 3S 2200mAh packs. Pretty fun bird overall but she's not cheap. Hoping to get some more flights in to get a better feel for her & get her dialed in a bit more...

I'm flying the smaller 900mm wingspan version of this plane and having a real blast! I bought the 900mm version for flying in smaller parks, but I have been tempted to try the larger 1100mm version for larger parks and windier days. Your comments about its flight characteristics seem to confirm the assumptions I had made about how the larger version would likely fly.

Glad you're enjoying your new 900mm Sbach EPP. I checked into the 900mm version as well before going with the 1100. What sold me on this bigger ship wasn't the price, it was the longer wingspan, removable wings & the larger AS-2814 motor...
I have the Katana EPO that came with the same motor as the Sbach 342 900 EPP. It ran poorly, got extremely hot during the short flights (<5:00) & it ended up failing almost immediately... Took me a long time to get that plane dialed in. After a few other direct motor swaps with limited success, I eventually cut the nose off, made a new light plywood motor mount & installed an older HK 900mm warbird bell-type outrunner on there instead of the can types. She flies great now after making the switch but the landing gear was also a real problem......
Even so, I still like the Tech One 3D airframes. That's one of the reasons why I went ahead & took a chance with this latest Sbach 1100mm offering. Aside from the integral EPP rudder hinge failing so quickly, I'm hoping this is will turn out to be a good one, especially since it was a gift from the wifey... Only time will tell after I get chance to really wring her out...

...servos with 3D arms... I'm betting the cheaper ARF version from NP (or HK) without any electronics comes with the longer arms, though. In fact, I saw these as part of the kit advertised on the HK website.......
The ARF/kit that I got had a T-Motor, ESC & the (Tech One) electronics. So far, all these parts are working fine even though the stock servos aren't the metal-geared type. Just have to wait & see how long everything lasts to know if it was worth buying it all together...

Rackin' Up Some More...
...Sbach EPP flights......
Flew her a few more times yesterday. Starting to get the throws dialed in. Had to reduce the amount of elevator on mid-rates to about 50% travel. Seems she tends to want to fall out of the sky when applying more than that if you don't compensate with a fair amount of throttle to keep airflow over the wings... Learned that the hard way & tore the motor mount off the fuse in process... Epoxied it all back together so she's good to go......
Also been adjusting the thrust angle somewhat. She doesn't need any down thrust but I did shim the X-mount to add a couple of degrees of right thrust. She feels just about neutral when inverted using 3S 2200 mAH packs. Playin' around with 4-point rolls & been practicing some really nice & stable HA upright harriers. Will be working on inverted ones next. Gettin' around 5:30 mins of mixed throttle flight times using an EMP 12x6E prop. She flys better on 30C packs, too. Seems like the (older) 25C packs I have just aren't quite strong enough for this bird. Going to try some 3S 40C 1800 ones to lighten her up a bit & see how she does next time out...

Got my self one of those:
A Hobby King Sbach342-1100 Profile 3D EPP
Pretty much the same thing by the looks.
I can see how that rudder got torn off on a harrier landing;
it is very low to the ground and most likely to be the first thing
to touch on landing. So, me thinks a tail wheel is in the order.
Free wheeling, just to lift the tail up a bit. As it is it will touch the
ground on take off. (now where is that tail section of that plane
I crashed 6 months ago?)
I also doubled up on the rudder linkage as the supplied wire
buckles easily when pushing the rudder.
And I had to make new servo trays as the supplied ones are
meant for larger servos.
All that is left to do now is final assembly to determine CG, and
the maiden flight. The weather is monsoonal with strong winds
for a few days yet, so this may have to wait a while, darn it!
Using the following equipment from Hobby King:
Turnigy D3542/6 1000KV Brushless Outrunner Motor
Turnigy AE-45A Brushless ESC
TGY-211DMH Metal gear Coreless Digital Servo
ZIPPY Compact 2200mAh 3S 25C Lipo
Will do propeller testing next, trying from 10x4.7, 11x4, and 11x7.

Yep, I am adding a small fixed tail wheel tomorrow and may change out the rudder servo/linkage. Nice plane and cannot wait for Sunday to zap it around some more.

They Are Out There...
...other Tech One/HK 1100 EPP pilots that is......
Yeah, can't figure out why they didn't pattern the rudder assembly after their Swift model. Much better attachment with a slot instead of a butt joint... Also, I had to trim the foam on the joint since the edges were beveled on both pieces which didn't make for a good glue joint......
What I did to help with the rudder to ground contact was put a plastic skid on the the bottom edge after I trimmed some of the foam off the bottom. I also just installed a simple Dubro tail skid on the foam nub ahead of the rudder. The extra height now stops this taildragger from dragging its tail...pun intended... I may cut the nub off completely & go with a tail wheel as you've pointed out, though. This (next) mod has been on my mind since the last time I flew her......
Having good results using hot glue on the repaired parts. My next plan is to try out a 12x5E SF of 12x4.7E SF prop for more thrust. The stock motor can definitely swing these larger props, too......

How does this plane compare to the similar size (older) HobbyKing Yak55 EPP ?
It seems to have more carbon in the tail.
I cant decide which one to buy.
for those thinking about buying this plane from Hobbyking....
If you add a single servo to the order, freight cost is reduced as it will ship at a cheaper rate from HongKong instead of direct from China.

I'm in the process of putting this plane together, making my mods.
First mod is to replace all control arms and clevises with stronger ones.
Second, I've replaced and cut the tail and rudder control surfaces at the foam joint, and put in small metal pinned hinges, instead of relying on that foam joint to hold up=less stress on the servos and quicker response time.
Third, I sanded down the bottom of the rudder about and inch, to prevent tail dragging.
Fourth, I went with a slightly bigger moter and esc.
Fifth, I sanded the top/front of the rudder to match the main body contour.
I'm also going to beef up the nub for tail drag foam part...maybe some light weight metal guard or tape.
This could be an excellent 3D foamie, but ya got to do some mods, just like every other foamie out there.
Will redue wing joints if necessray after first couple of flights

Finally had a couple of hours of reasonable weather for a maiden flight.
She flies; and more. Started on low rates at 40% with 30% expo.
I was glad I didn't go overboard with the rates. This is not a trainer!
Thank god for that! A very responsive and agile little machine.
The HK Sbach342-1100 Profile 3D EPP 1100mm (KIT)
On a VOX 11x4 after just over 5:30 the batteries recovered after two minutes to 3.76V.
During that first flight it did need a couple of clicks of left AIL and a couple down EL.
Flying knife edge in 2nd gear on 70% throws it took only have stick deflection
on 55% expo to hold knife edge attitude on about 55% throttle (that last one is a guess!)
She flies well inverted and my couple of very short hovers (two mistakes high!)
showed plenty of power available for a one way ticket to heaven.
I did some testing with a handheld luggage scale device and a 10x47 prop and an 11x7.
Got a max thrust of almost 1.2Kg on the 10x47, and well over 1.3Kg with the 11x7 prop.
By that point the max Amps showed 41Amp; a bit high overall, so the
11x5 plastic/carbon mix props will hopefully arrive in the mail by next week.
The plane did develop a problem at the end of the maiden when the tail started to flutter.
I was flying a little faster, not full throttle, and the tail got very agitated and would have
torn itself off on full throttle. Time was up so I landed on a slight harrier attitude and
I can report that the landing gear is on the flimsy side of solid.
It's the only way to learn!
Took it up for flight 2 after checking for slack in the linkage and all looked good.
Only for a minute though. The tail was oscillating badly on half throttle.
That was it for the day.
Once at home I fitted a thin, flat piece of carbon to stiffen the most flexing part
of the rudder, see foto.
In this picture you can also see the way I reshaped the tail end of the rudder to avoid
scraping the ground on take off and reshaping the top front to follow the planes contours.
Am looking forward to tune this plane as soon as possible. It seems to hold the given
attitude really well, this is no self righting plane at all.
It looks like it is capable to fly as on rails; on first impressions.

Motor is not enough for hower.
Elevator control link is too weak for that position.

Very happy with mine too. One issue I had was the wobbling rudder - fixed with carbon flat rod glued in top of rudder and fitted a metal gear servo to rudder.
