mbreslin,

Go back to the bad video I posted (the one with three planes that was too dark). You can see the 11x7 apc e on that Funcub and it goes vertical several times. Just don't try for orbital insertion.

This made me laugh out loud. Orbital insertion is something I laugh about trying with my easystar. I've been tempted to get some autofocusing binoculars and some kind of head gear and an altimeter gadget or watch or something I could stick on board and just see how high I could go.

AJ: I've decided to paint first (an awesome shade of blue I haven't decided on yet). Are you happy with the paint you chose? Would you use it again? And can you list the brand/type again please?

Thanks.

Prop/Motor question?

Hi gang,

The recommended power pack setup comes with a 13x4 prop Using this power setup, what is the smallest prop I could safely use?

I'm looking for something shorter so blade strikes will be less prone.

Thanks

Ask around what other folks are using. My turned out terrible. I would not use it again for anything. Ask Prof100 what he used. His turned out excellent. He told me buy whatever it was and I forgot right after I found out that it was not available in this area.
After some looking, I found it, I think. Here is what I should have used. THIS is what Prof100 used on his. Take a look at his blog. It is NICE.

These automotive paint colors go on flat and gloss is achieved with clear top coat. Film build is minimal to achieve full coverage. No primer is required. The white foam is an excellent palet Good stuff.

You can buy this at most automotive part stores. Advanced Auto and O'Reilly Autoparts are stores in my part of the country. A large can is $6.

You can also repaint your golf cart.

Here is a picture of the can.

Found it, (posting for my reference).

Thanks AJ.

Yes, I used automotive touch up paint by Duplicolor. They make a acrylic enamel and and acrylic lacquer. I used the chrome yellow acrylic enamel. I have not tested the lacquer on the elapor foam.

I topcoated Future Floor wax which is pure, water based acrylic would work just as well for a top coat. The multi part pictures have accurate color.

The recommended power pack comes with a 840Kv motor. A low speed/high torque motor screams for a big prop to get the best performance. I probably wouldn't consider a prop less than 11". The answer really depends on how you want to fly. You really need a combo that generates 50-70 watts of power per pound just to stay airborne. 70-90 watts per pound for just cruising. 90-110 watts per pound for decent aerobatic performance. 150-200 watts per pound for unlimited vertical and 3D performance. If you don't already have a watt meter, invest in one. I find mine very helpful.

I think a smaller prop will need a higher pitch number for comparable performance. Take a look at the manual for the motor here... Himax HC3516-840 Motor Manual. See the chart on page 2.
