Question
Airfoils in Phoenix 5

How does one decide which wing airfoil to use when building a particular model? Is there a description anywhere of the characteristics of each airfoil?

I recall reading somewhere in these forums that for many models an airfoil with a curved upper surface and flat bottom works well. As far as I can tell, none of the airfoils in Phoenix Builder meet that description. Some come closer than others, but none that I could see that are completely flat on the bottom. Any thoughts about that?

Thanks,

Bill

The idea is that you decide what you want (or are using) on the actual model then choose something close to it in the Builder. It isn't really intended to teach you how to design models.

The airfoil for the real thing is chosen depending on how you want it to fly and how you intend to build it. Trainer and slow fly types often use a cambered airfoil with a fairly flat base, sport and aerobatic models are more likely to use a zero-camber airfoil (often called symmetrical, curved the same top and bottom). And there are many other shapes possible for a whole range of purposes.
