All this talk about fishing reminded me of years ago (40+), when I went eel poaching with my father. We'd go out at night in a little rowing boat, fill the boat about ankle deep with water (wearing boots), using short sticks as fishing rod, and an old nylon stocking filled with worms as bait. We'd shine a light into the water. The eels would be attracked by the light, nibble on the bait, and their teeth would get stuck in the nylon stocking. Then a quick swing with the rod over the boat, the eel, coming out of the water would wiggle itself free from the nylon and fall in the boat.
On a good night, between the two of us we'd catch 150 - 200 eels...
No wonder it was illegal...
