Charging QC 830's Question
I have just purchased a few Qualcomm 830 packs, already made up without the protection circuit. I have done a search and read lots of posts with people flying without them on a Tiger Moth with an IPS A drive. My question is, can I charge 2 cells without the protection circuit if I use a Li-ion charger like the Hobby Lobby one shown below?
POT010 - Lithium Charger (adjustable)
It seems that this is a good charger for the QC's set up with a 200mah charge rate. Some people prefer to have the protection circuit on while charging, others state it isn't necessary, as you don't use it when charging 3 cell packs.
Any clarification would be great. Thanks.

Yes, either the POT010 or POT011 listed on the same page at Hobby Lobby will work on QC830s without protection circuit. I'm not sure which of these two chargers has the most potential for future use beyond the QC830s. Perhaps someone here has experience with both of them, or has researched them. The 200mAh charge rate is low. The original QC cell phone charger for the 830s charges at 1C, which is standard procedure for Li-ion and LiPo cells, giving a 1-hour charge. A charge rate of 200mAh is less than .25C, and will take much longer.
The safety circuit is not necessary for charging as long as you take precautions. Do not leave them unattended, and do not have any combustible materials nearby. I charge mine on my concrete basement floor at least 6 feet away from anything.

Yes, I agree, the rate seems low giving nearly 4 hrs of charge time required, but the investment is small. I have plenty of NiCad and NiMh batteries around, and most of my planes are speed 280-600 anyway, these will be only for the TM.
Any place known where I can get a charger with a higher rate, for reasonable cost?

Thanks dave, just what I was looking for. I already ordered one and hopefully I'll soon be extending my flight times
Thanks for the help.
