L-4 Grasshopper ~ My First Scratch Drawn Plan Build

Here are my plans for an L-4 Grasshopper I drew up from a 3 view pic. This is the first plan I've drawn up so it will be a work in progress until I get the" hopper" in the air. I will try to update regularly and welcome any feedback on improvements to the plan.

The plan itself is a combination of ideas I gathered up from my first 6 foamy builds from plans found through this site. It is built from 6 mm Depron and 1" pink foam, held together with CA, Epoxy, Gorilla Glue and Foam Tack.

SPECS:
Wing span = 48"
Length = 31.5"
AUW (with battery & painted) = 24oz
Prop = 10x6 Master Airscrew
Motor = 850kv
ESC = 20 Amp
Battery = 2200mAh, 20c, 3s1p Li-Po
COG = 50mm - 60mm from leading edge
Static thrust = 23.7 (calculated) @ 10amps
Motor thrust offset = NONE

My Setup:
Aileron/Rudder Mix = 20%
Aileron dual rate = 80%, expo = 40%
Elevator dual rate = 50%, expo = 30%
Rudder dual rate = 30%, expo = 30%

Note: I am in the process of building the prototype and will amended the plans as I go. So far so good, the pics match the plans.

Update:

I really didn't know what I was going to do about mounting the tail wheel. I ended up using two pieces of 1/8" ply laminated and drilled out for a .147 tail wheel wire. I notched the lower fuse to accept the laminated ply and epoxied it in.

Credits...
Like I said above, there were many contributors to this design. As I built from the many excellent plans here, I collected numerous ideas and incorporated them into this build.

Monoblock idea - Tony65x55's Bluebaby
VLF design ideas - dz1sfb's VLF Combat Planes
KFM2 design ideas - davereap
KFM2 design ideas - headlessagain

Thanks all, this was a fun project...

Progress So Far

I work kinda slow but I'm hackin' at it...

The wing dihedral won't be scale like the 3 view but should help it fly really well.

Looks like you have a good start on things. I think you also did a good job on your plans. Looking forward to your build and first flight report.

Making slow progress. Really had a tough time building the landing gear, couldn't get the solder to take. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

Looking good so far! Just a guess but your copper wrapping wire looks like it totally rejected the solder flow, could it be that you used enamelled wire instead of bare copper? Where did you get it from? Really good looking gear for your first try, keep up the good work!

Thanks Jay,

You know, I thought the surface of the copper seemed to feel different than what I was used to. I had a length of stranded ground wire left over from my shop rebuild so I stripped it and used the single strands for the gear. I'll bet it is enameled. I'm gonna rip it apart this evening and find some bare copper and try again.

Thanks again Jay,

Mike

Now if the wind would just cooperate. I'll post results of the maiden and hopefully a video.

Thanks all for the wonderful comments!! I added credits in the first post for all those the who helped make this build what it is.

The wind is still 12-16 for the next couple of days so she'll have to sit in the hangar for a while.

Thanks again,

Mike
