Sky Hero Spyder 1000 Build

Spent a few hours on eCalc and came up with a plan for the Sky Hero Spyder 1000 frame that should give me at least 15 min flights. This rig is designed for long duration AP work so reliability and consistency is critical.

Here's the parts list so far:
  • Sky Hero Spyder 1000 frame (quad)
  • DJI Naza V2 w/GPS
  • DJI Zenmuse H3 2D
  • GoPro Hero3+ Black
  • Tiger U5 400kv motors
  • RangeVideo 20x5.5 props
  • 6s2p 10000 mah lipo
  • Castle Creations QuadPack 35Amp ESC

I had to purchase the pancake motor upgrade kit to allow the U5 motors to fit. Unfortunately Sky Hero only makes them in olive drab so I'm painting them to match the rest of the frame.

Next batch of parts should arrive on Wednesday.

Made more progress today. Also ordered a set of Tiger 45A ESCs since I'm not sure the Castle 35s will be enough.

The pancake motor mounts came out okay with some Krylon.

These RangeVideo props were pretty easy to balance but I can't say there a big leap in quality. I would say they are very similar to props I've purchased from RCtimer in the past.

The U5 400 kv motors were not able to handle 20" props. The quad fell out of the sky after about 2 mins. Same scenario on 18" and then again on 15"s after 4 mins.

The issue appears to be how the ESC is mounted in the boom. If you notice there are 'vents' next to the motor where the mount meets the boom. The idea being that air flows from the prop down inside the boom to the inside of the fuselage. This flow is critical to keep the ESC from overheating. It's important to make sure that you don't stuff the booms with wire - so that air can flow around the ESC to keep them cool.

Stay tuned for version 2.

Here's what happens when you have no airflow through the arms.

U5's are not meant for 20" props.
14/15/16” is closer to the mark...

Yeah, it was totally my error. They don't like 18"s either.

Some people are having issues with simonk and u5 motors also. So they may contribute.
But yes 20" props won't work on those motors

After a lot of bench testing I've discovered that the issue is the T-Motor ESCs. Running at 50% throttle they reach 150 degrees rather quickly. If I hook up the U5 motor running a 15x6.5 to a Castle 35amp ESC they top out at 126 degrees at 50% throttle.

I cannot recommend tiger ESCs mounted in the booms.

Here's the current version in flight. It's ultra-stable and reliable. Lately I'm flying with a Zippy 6s 8000mah and getting about 15 mins of flying time. I'm still determining the max time I can get on those batteries.

Nice... Do you have any flight video, not FPV but filmed from the ground. I would really like to se how it looks in flying and, how agile it is.

I would not recommend mounting any ESC in the boom. Here is an example of how I configured my Sky-Hero. It works out great with plenty of cooling for the ESC's.

Your 1000 looks great.............
