First FPV build - JP Green Sleeve...
Well as this is my first FPV build I thought I'd document it here for you guys to see and offer any advice along the way. For a while I've fancied the JP Green Sleeve just as a general hack, so had a look through all the threads to see if it had already been used for FPV. Luckily I found a forum member, ommadawn, who has used the GS for just this purpose (I found photos of his GS's in the "show us your plane" thread). I e-mailed ommadawn with a few questions and he was very kindly forthcoming with lots of information on the model, stating that the blow moulded PVC fuselage was very tough and the inside was cavernous - perfect for FPV. So there we go - mind made up!...
Well out of the box, the first thing that struck me was how bent the fuselage was!!! Oh well, being PVC, the heat gun came out and slowly but surely she's straightening up. I may jig the model and apply some more heat and let it cool in the jig as it tends to bend back during cooling. Apart from that the rest of the model is typical ARTF - hot glue everywhere with most of the plywood internals loose (never mind, they were coming out anyway). The covering is actually very good and there's a small amount of the green covering supplied with the model for repairs. Elevator & rudder pushrods are already fitted and seem sturdy enough although the aileron pushrods fell apart in my hands It seems the thread of the clevis doesn't match that of the rod - bin. There's a steel wing joiner which will be getting replaced with a carbon fibre item and that's about it!... I plan to use as much of the RC spares I have stock-piled to build the GS so the first thing to go was the speed 600 motor. Replaced with a Hacker motor and ESC from a Sebart model, weighing a lot less and taking up half the room. Hitec HS85MG's on the elevator and rudder out of my old Falcon 120 model. Both HS85MG's were on the elevator on the turbine and handled 200MPH+ so should be fine in a glider!. Parkzone digital servos in the wings fitted with some neat little servo mounts from the LHS, nice clean install using nuts & bolts instead of glue so easily removable... The plywood shelf/servo tray in the fuselage was OK but it was cut for standard servos. I made an adapter plate but then found the whole tray sat too low to fit the two lipos I plan to use underneath. Option 1 - fit lipos one behind the other. Option 2 - re-fit...so out it came. I turned the bearers it sat on upside down and made a new tray out of carbon fibre (effect ) sheet. Nicer looking and slightly lighter than the original. With the bearers upside down I can now fit two lipos side by side underneath the tray freeing up the space behind the motor ... I've made another shelf to fit the esc underneath the canopy below which there's a nice space in which I plan to fit the OSD. The Rx and FYAP will sit on the new servo tray with the VTx behind the ele/rud servos, aerial fitted through fuselage just behind wing. I plan to sink a pan servo into the wing join to fit the cam on but will have to investigate beefing up the wing joint, don't want the wings clapping hands... Just waiting on a prop and spinner now to maiden her without the video gear. watch this space. Sorry about the quality of the photos, that's an iPhone for you! ImagesView all Images in thread

A forum member here called 'Trappy' builds and sells a Vario for onboard FPV thermal flying!
Reall gliders have a vario that beeps when lift is found, the fast the beep the bigger the lift, it also tells you when there is sink, sink is the other end of the thermal, where there is lift in one place there is sink somewhere else, and this little device will let you be really efficent on your model... In effect, you could run your motor for 2 mins, get 500ft height and stay there for hours depending on the weather etc... i think his page is: http://www.lastonedown.com check out his videos, its pure and hes a great guy |

I think they make a practical platform especially if you want flight duration. I thought about smaller stuff for ease of transport etc. but if you've gotta keep running the motor flight times are going to suffer. I may have to quiz you then Pasty on any glider issues I run into!

Yup Trappys L1D is a great piece of kit, check out this vid which was a maiden of a Great Planes Siren Hotliner with a L1D.
You feed the output of the L1D into the audio channel and it indicates lift and sink, lift by beeps and sink by continuious tones. near the end i got in a thermal and climber her to 600m That video was actually over 1/2 hr on a 2200mah 3cell lipo but unfortunatly the recorder ran out of space. http://vimeo.com/13281978 |

Hey Jon
You live in slope soaring country, loads of big hills, mountains aswell as some stunning coastline... in slope lift you'll be able to fly for as long as you like without using your motor... the only things taking power will be your vid gear and rc gear... a 2200 pack would give you like 2 hours flight time I dont flat field with my gliders, I throw them all off cliffs... and none of them have motors. |

i have been flying for humm 11 years now, i have gone in and out of the hobbie in that time, i taught myself how to fly on a slope my first ever frame was a epp bullet, i have always kept a wing or sloper always its just to easy and so rewarding to know that your flying with mother nature...
Add a set of FPV gear to a slope soarer and its Rc orgazums for me |
