E-Flite UMX ASK-21 glider

Quote:
Overview
The E-flite UMX ASK-21 is a scale RC sailplane of the renowned two-seater designed by Rudolf Kaiser and built by the famous Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co. A first of its kind, the UMX ASK-21 is an elegant fully functional 4-channel aircraft that, at altitude, is capable of loops and rolls, as well as thermal or slope soaring that's popular around the world. Lightweight and sleek, its onboard AS3X™ System is custom tuned to offer the silky-smooth experience of flying a giant-scale sailplane, even in breezy conditions. Like a giant-scale sailplane, the UMX ASK-21 is equipped with remote tow hook release control making it aerotow capable when paired with a powerful RC airplane like the E-flite UMX Carbon Cub SS (EFLU1180). You’ll find that its onboard AS3X System is excellent at stabilizing the various flight conditions an unpowered model can encounter, especially at high speeds during launch on the Hi-start or tow line. The UMX ASK-21 can be ready for its first flight in just a few minutes. Just charge the included Li-Po battery and bind to your own full range DSM2™ or DSMX® 4-channel transmitter, such as the Spektrum DX4e.

Very nice! I was lucky enough to get some stick time in one of these on Oahu, HI. It's a very well balanced sailplane. It's a nice looking plane, as well. I hope they sell a bunch of them. I'm a bit concerned about how much of a market there is for a micro sized scale sailplane. We'll find out!

Hi-start launch system = The Carbon Cub tow plane

Remote tow hook release = A servo on the 5th channel that lets go of the wire, like any other tow hook release.

Do they realy call the use of a towplane "Hi-start launch system"...?
I was more hoping for some kind of winch or bungee... :-(

I am sure that Horizon is working on another design that is motorized. Maybe this is a test to see just how much market there is and then they will bring out others.

Me!

I've been wanting to build a small sailplane for a long time. This is way better than what I was thinking and gyro stabilization means it can be flown in a much wider range of conditions.

Do you remove the wings to put it in a box, or is it the largest box ever?

As far as the market, I think that if you buy the Cub for floats, or skis, or fpv (should be awesome for that), you almost have to buy the glider as well. And sure enough, it's priced decently, so it's also a good entry point for someone who just want the electronic to move it into other UMs... Wondering if there's a brushed esc on board. If that's the case, then, it could pobably go staight into any old UMs for a AS3X conversion, particularly if it's programmable.

Hi-start is part elastic with a long cord attached. It's not a bungee launch.

The cord is four or five times the length of the rubber, which is not as strong as you would use for a bungee launch. The effect is that the rubber acts like someone running with a kite string and the glider goes up like a kite.

Very nice simple way to get a reasonable height without much effort.
