The Minwax is great stuff for hangar rash protection and a gloss coat over paint.
It's also good for "glassing" instead of using finishing resin. Easier, and dries fast, but not as durable or rigid as glassing with epoxy.
As far as primers go, always on a composite model. With foam, I like to start with a light grey or white (for spraying lighter colors). If it's white foam to begin with, a light colored primer is not needed except to create a barrier for paint that might attack the foam.
