Hover craft built in the 80's

Hello, does anyone know the hovercraft that was built in the 80's. It was powered by a ducted fan unit from Bryon. I think it was advertised in RCU a lot.

Hello computermonkey,

That is just amazing! Back in the 80`s a hovercraft with a Byron ducted fan...

Do you have a photo of it or better, a scan of RCU?

And more, to be advertised, I suppose it was a comercial one...
As far as I know, Byron ducted fan was patented in the end of December 1981, so, just 9 years left to produce it, test it, and install it in a hovercraft (probably going to market) at that time...

If you find one, for sure it will be a lost milestone in RC Hovercraft history!
If you at least find a scan of it in RCU, will be a big "archeologic" discover.

I am also using a Byron ducted fan in my last "20 years celebration" hovercraft but, we where just back in 2011...

Best regards,

Carlos

I can not remember the exact years. I thought it was sometime in the 80's, maybe early 90's. I just remember that it used the Bryon ducted fan unit. I thought it was pretty awesome for the time. I just can't remember any of the details about it.

I was hoping someone with some copies of RCU would come across it and maybe upload a pdf of it to this site.

The exact year (or at least the decade close to it) is a VERY important "detail" to make history...

Back in 1999 (as far as I know) there where only 3 pages in the internet, referring to RC Model Hovercraft, one was mine.

Some years after, the first international (no internal/national ones at the time!) appeared and still exists:
http://www.rc-hovercrafts.com/
If I remember, we where in 2004 or close...

NO ONE AT ANY TIME (since now) referred/posted or remebered such a thing as you are telling us now...

My guess is that you are confusing the Byron ducted fan that I am using since 2011 (tested and posted here, in this forum back in 2010) with some other...thing!!

I trully hope that you can find (or someone else) some reliable proof of that milestone!
...
I am a bit unconfortable, being the first in such manny achievements in R/C model hovercraft as; introducing 1/4 scaled Racing Hovercraft, using a BYRON ducted fan in rc model hovercraft, making the first scaled rc RACING hovercraft, the first (since some decades ago, not copyed till now) to implement a full realistic moving figure (pilot),probably the most performing RC hovercraft, and so on...

Yes, I know, I am NOT (anymore) a modest person, I gave up being it some years ago!
After working hard more than 20 years on developing a big amount of Hovercraft models and improvements, most of them prooved and milestones shared in the internet (some of them that can be used and implemented in real scale Hovercraft)…

Best regards,

Carlos

I was scanning through the topics here on RCGroups when I saw the Hover Craft link.

I was just thinking about this hover craft and thought it would be nice if i could find some more information on it.

I was hoping someone would see this and remember the hover craft.

Your post is the first I have heard of your website and the cool stuff you have done with hover craft.

I trully believe on that and, I am confortable to bet that, if it existed, it was a small diameter one (lets say, less than 9 cm diameter) and, of course...electric!

Nothing compared (and 10 years after) to the initial post on this thread.

Carlos

Hi Carlos
Yes it does exist in the UK.
size : 33ins x 16ins approx, powered by 40 - 90 glow, propulsion was 6ins ducted fan and I believe it will be commercially available again soon as a grp moulding + skirt ready made, uprated to take glow and petrole ngine with larger propulsion duct.

Go Advanced then Manage Attachments. That will tell you what file types and sizes are accepted.

This should be interesting because I have vague memories of something similar too .

Well...again a problem with the exact time

That one was presented (photos posted in internet) by the owner...
...in April 2004 !

I got a copy for you and added his name; Peter (just Peter is enough for this case).
We had some talks at the time, we shared some ideas about making and releasing reasonable priced, decent RC Hovercraft for the general public, we both had another thing in common; both of us had a past very closed and connected to real scale racing Hovercraft.

At the time (2004 ) Peter had only one, just the prototype! On Sat Apr 10, 2004 12:25 pm, he revealed that, he was about to go for production...but it never happened, I suppose. He wanted to sell this and some more models, also a multi.blade prop and pulleys and belts and...some people complained (I am not going any further, I respect Peter, we had some similar ideas an good discussions).

He claimed 47 mph for this craft but, not only me but others, asked him for some proofs, he said he had a video but, never shared...

At that time (also in 2004) I also made and posted photos and a small video of my last creation (in 2004) it was the "Big 13"" celebrating my 13 years developing RC Racing Hovercraft, that one...
...with a ducted fan and nitro powered by a .40 glow.

http://www.ovarcraft.com/ovarcraft%2...nstruction.pdf

Some years after (in 2009) I also shared the same video in Youtube.
